Barbara Klauber, Editor
A Lenten Meditation by The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

"Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful...."  Joel 2:12-13a NRSV

Dear Friends in Christ,

On Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we begin the holy season of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and self-denial in preparation for Easter. Over my years in ordained ministry I have written a number of articles for parish and diocesan publications inviting those in my pastoral care to observe a holy Lent. These articles have urged the faithful to take on a spiritual discipline rather than see Lent as a season of giving up or invited folks to participate in Lenten programming. While these are good things, I want to invite us this year to go deeper.

We hear the prophet Joel invite us to rend our hearts and not our garments on Ash Wednesday. When we do that what do we see? I suspect that if we are honest with ourselves we see that even before this tearing there was much brokenness within. We see the scars left by our own failings, the brokenness of others, and the culture in which we live. If you are at all like me I suspect you see your own selfishness, your participation in unjust structures of society, and your denial of the truth not only about yourself and your relationship with those you love but the world in which we live. But as we rend our hearts, we see also the possibility of healing. A heart must be broken before it can be healed, just as a surgeon must open the body before it can be repaired.

Of late, I have become increasingly aware that it Lent is to mean anything it must mean surrender to grace as the operative in our life rather than our will -- Letting go and inviting God in Christ through the Spirit to enter deeply and receive the grace to be formed and molded by God, and God alone, rather than our images of God that are often less than God and frequently are idols. (I have often said the entire library which is the Bible, is a conversation and call to reject idolatry in all of its forms.)

What idols is God inviting you to set aside this Lent? What might you be worshiping that is less than God? Are we so busy trying to save ourselves that there is no room for the Savior?

These are the questions I am asking this Lent. Will you join me?

The Ordination of a Priest

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller ordained Pickett Wall to the Episcopal priesthood on February 20th at St.  John's Northwestern Military Academy (SJNWMA) in Delafield.  Students from the academy participated in the service, as did members of Pickett Walls' family. The Rev. Pickett Wall serves as chaplain at SJNWMA.
Prayer Request: Trinity, Janesville New Rector Search

Dear parishes: Trinity recently experienced a Faith Stories Weekend sponsored by Faith Alive and led by Tom Riley its past director. Tom challenged us to ask prayer from all of you for this discernment process. God gave Tom the word "stretch" concerning Trinity. God is indeed stretching Trinity and asking it to trust the Holy Spirit, trust one another and pray for guidance in its search. We include you in this process because we believe "in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints." Tom used this prayer from the prayer book during our weekend inviting us to dedicate ourselves to God in this discernment process. Please join us:

A PRAYER OF SELF-DEDICATION (adapted)
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so
guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our  wills, that
we may be completely yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us,
we pray, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. BCP pg. 831

Milwaukee Episcopal priests rock the house with a religious message
(L-R) The Reverends Drew Bunting, David Simmons, Don Fleischman, and Andy Jones
This article appeared in the February 25, 2014 edition of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

They call themselves the Rectors of Rock. The Fathers of Funk. The Collar Studs.

It's all cheeky fun, but believe it or not, these four Episcopal priests live up to the billing.

Fathers Drew Bunting, Andrew Jones, David Simmons and Don Fleischman are the fab four of Monstrance, a rock, blues and country band more interested in fun than fame, whose members lend their considerable talents to worthy causes throughout the Milwaukee diocese.

"We're not in this to make money. We know we're never going on tour," said Bunting, priest-in-charge at St. James Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, who sings lead vocals and plays bass in the band. "We just want to have a good time. We know we have these gifts, and we want to use them in service of the greater good."

Monstrance will take top billing - OK, the only billing - on the Red Door Tour when they rock St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in River Hills on Friday. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Red Door Clothes ministries at St. James & Trinity Episcopal churches in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, and the Hospitality Center at St. Luke's in Racine.   read more

Trinity, Baraboo Team at Baraboo Heart Faire 2014: Healthy Hearts Across a lifetime!

Illustrated are the members of Trinity Episcopal church's (Baraboo) Health & Wellness Team gathered in front of their interactive exhibit offering guests the opportunity to learn Hands-Only CPR and hands-on use of AED's, while at another exhibit, Fr. Scott Seefeldt offered the heart healthy experiences of spinning and bicycling. Members of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew provided guest services.  Tho a comparatively small parish, Trinity has established a large presence in the community through it's heart-health related programs.  There were 23 Trinity "Red-Shirts" at the Faire.

Trinity, its parish nurses Terri Thomas RN & Jeff Culbertson RN, and it's community outreach program Community Heart Saver Education Program initiated , in partnership with the Parish Nursing ministry of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Faire  in 2012 (biannual event). Trinity , along with St. Joseph's, the St Clare Coalition of Parish Nurses, and St.Clare Hospital, continues to be a hosting sponsor of this well-received community health faire, next to be presented in 2016.

Fourth Annual Gathering of Roman Catholic
and Episcopal deacons held at St. John's Cathedral

Photo by The Rev. Karen Buker

Saturday, February 15th, Deacons from both the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee met for the 4th time. This has become an annual gathering for the sharing of worship, learning and shared ministry. The annual gathering is a "moveable feast",  having met at both of the respective Cathedrals as well as at  St. Bartholomew's (Episcopal)  and St. Anthony on the Lake (Roman Catholic) both in Pewaukee. It is our goal to continue to grow in our mutual understanding of how deacons can serve God in His church and to accentuate our similarities through that service.
