Deacons' Formation School

January 14, 2014 - A Letter from Bill Dunlop, Postulant in the discernment process and student at D.F.S.

It has been over a year since I had been accepted as a postulant for the vocational diaconate. For the past four months Cliff Perkins from Good Shepherd in Sun Prairie and I have traveled over to the DeKoven Center in Racine early on Saturday morning to our deacon training sessions in all sorts of weather. The drive has been well worth it. The sessions are informative and taught by instructors who make each one of the subjects come alive. We have completed five of the courses and are coming to the close of others soon. The opportunity to lead each of the offices and serve in the Eucharist in our future roles has developed confidence as I begin to expand my ministries. The diocese and the team who have developed the curriculum and attracted the instructors have done a great job.

I have continued to preach and increase my roles at St. Andrews as part of my preparations for the diaconate. I also continue to be active in the ministries which I am most passionate: youth, young families and the men's group. I will be starting my second and last year as senior warden. This has been an especially busy time with the parish working on a Mutual Ministry Review, beginning a campus and facility planning study, and preparing for Father Andy's sabbatical.

I am continuing to search for a clinical pastoral training site in an area related to youth. This has turned out to be a difficult process and I may need to look in another area of ministry for this experience. I have begun my internship at St. Andrews but plan to complete it at another parish in the area, hopefully in the setting of a smaller community near Madison. I have also accepted an invitation to join the Lifelong Christian Formation Commission for the diocese.

I continue with my secular work. I have recently been asked to chair the Diversity Committee of the local chapter of the American Public Works Association. I have been active on that committee for the past few years and welcome the opportunity to chair it. I will be finishing up a committee chair position with another organization where we have repaired a relationship with the agency we were supposed to interact with.

The training and discernment process continues to be a spiritually moving process and a time of change for me.

I would like to thank each of you and the diocese for your continued support of me and my discernment.

Peace,

Bill Dunlop

The Episcopal Church Runs with You!

"If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."

- Emil Zapotek

Distance running is an experience unlike any other: challenging, exhilarating, inspiring, and unforgettable. For many people who identify as runners, running is an act of prayer as well as a means of exercise. Running keeps us centered and connects us to the One who created us and called us good, and we want to connect with others who feel the same way.

To that end, you are invited to join other runners from the Diocese of Milwaukee in running the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon on Sunday, October 5, 2014. We will gather as a group for a prayer and a photo before the run (details TBD).

Even if you are not an experienced runner, but have wanted to make a commitment to health and wellness, consider this a prompting of the Spirit! All sorts of marathon training programs exist to suit all sorts of runners, from beginners to veterans. We will help direct you towards resources that you can use wherever you happen to be on the running spectrum. It is amazingly moving to see first-timers cross the finish line at a marathon!

More information regarding our diocesan running team will follow. For now, if you are interested, here's what you can do:

  • Join our Facebook group, DioMil Runners, to get connected to other runners in the Diocese. We will use the group to share questions, inspiration, and tips, and to organize the occasional group training run.
  • Email the Rev. Jason Lavann (jason.lavann@gmail.com) or the Rev. Dorota Pruski (associate@standrews-madison.org) with questions or inquiries.
  • Register for the race at http://www.milwaukeelakefrontmarathon.org. The race is expected to fill up by the end of March, so the earlier you sign up, the better!!!
