The 2014 cycle for United Thank Offerings is now open. Each diocese can submit up to 2 applications each year. One can come for a diocesan program, the second for overseas diocesan connection. We received a grant in 2012 for computers for the Next Generation and in 2013 a grant for the construction of cisterns for the Diocese of Newala.
Information about the criteria and the application itself can be found at the following e-mail address:
http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/united-thank-offering .
When you get to this page click on "information about the 2014 United Thank Offering granting process and priorities are now available."
On that screen go to the criteria item and then to the last item for the application itself. There are also other items on that page which can help you to determine if your grant request fits the criteria.
If you have questions please contact me at cott@chorus.net or 608-798-3688 and I can help you walk through the process. The deadline for UTO applications to be into the national UTO office is February 28 but since the application has to be reviewed by a diocesan committee and approved by Bishop Miller, the deadline for the application to be in the hands of the diocesan committee (Connie Ott - chair at cott@chorus.net ) is FEBRUARY15. If you are planning to submit an application, please let me know so that I can be available to help you with the application.
Meanwhile - thanks to all of you - parishes and individuals who have contributed to the United Thank Offering in 2013. If you want information about the United Thank Offering and how you or your parish can get involved, please contact me at cott@chorus.net .

Episcopal Church commemorates Alcoholics Anonymous spiritual mentor
On January 31, the Episcopal Church commemorates the Rev. Dr. Samuel Shoemaker. Ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1921, Shoemaker was called in 1925 to become the rector of Calvary Church, New York City. While serving at Calvary, Shoemaker led the American chapter of the Oxford Group, an international Christian movement in the 1930s-1940s, and was instrumental in the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Shoemaker is generally regarded as the spiritual mentor of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Below are two links to bulletin inserts(English and Spanish) for this Sunday January 26 that draw attention to the work of recovery, the role of the church and the resources offered by Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. Greetings from an old friend in Egypt . . .
 | The Christmas pageant |
This letter was received by Deacon Karen Buker from a woman she met in Egypt when the Diocese of Egypt was our companion diocese. The two women both have special needs children (Down's Syndrome) and established a lasting friendship.
Dear Friends,
Greetings from an ever turbulent Egypt! Scenes like those below have become a weekly occurrence; the car burning happening at the end of our road when a car tried to drive through a 'peaceful' protest which was blocking his way. The brotherhood continue to resist the interim government, insisting on calling the summer revolution a 'coup', and it seems they are fast trying to bring about destruction and chaos as their means to topple them. On the other hand the government's hard crack down on the brotherhood and their labeling them as 'terrorists' is only serving to inflame tempers and escalate the violence. All of this is a disaster for a country still trying to build up its failing economy and attract tourism as a means of doing this. We try to carry on our lives as normally as possible, but need vigilance and wisdom. Today I'm recovering from a bag snatching incident which has left me with some nasty cuts and bruises, but thankfully without any major harm. Please continue to pray for Egypt and the Middle East, for peace and for God to reveal his truth to the people here. Read more
