A Christmas message from Bishop Miller
And she gave birth to her first born son and wrapped him in
swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger. Luke 2:7
Dear Friends in Christ,
We gather each Christmas to hear again the story of Jesus' birth and to reflect on the meaning of the Incarnation. As I prepare to celebrate and preach in this my 29th Christmas in holy orders, I am struck again by how rich and deep is the mystery of our redemption.
Reflecting on the Incarnation many years ago the Desert Father, Isaac of Nineveh, wrote, "Humility is the garment of the Deity." And so it is. The stable, the manger bed, the bands of cloth that wrapped the infant child are all signs of this humble beginning. But faith invites us to go deeper and see in this proclamation a remembrance that the word humility's root is the word hummus or earth. In the Incarnation God takes on our earthiness, the Creator becomes one with the created. The Divine Word that put forth the "let it be," now is among that which was begun with a word and is one with it.
The truth of the Incarnation also reminds us that Christian faith is an embodied faith. It is a faith that is lived in actions of service and kindness, in giving and receiving, in being the continuation of the Incarnation as the Body of Christ, the Church.
May the joy we know in the birth of Christ inspire our actions this Christmas and throughout the year.
Cindy, Lauren, and Haley join me in wishing you a blessed and joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller
Bishop of Milwaukee

Baskets of Prayer in Milwaukee
By G. Jeffrey MacDonald (reprinted from The Living Church)
The people of St. Luke's Church in
Milwaukee have a way of knowing what their neighbors need - even those they've never met.
What's their secret? They ask. And they hear responses - "Pray for my uncle with cancer" or "Pray for my friend who needs a job" - even from those who never step inside the church.
Since 2010, St. Luke's has been collecting prayers in an outdoor prayer basket that sits in a wooden box atop a post. Passersby open the box, fill out a prayer request slip, and drop it down a slot into a basket.
Prayer slips are accessible only to a parishioner or staff member with a key. Prayers are then combined with those of parishioners, and each worshiper goes home on Sunday with a prayer request to fulfill.

SFH students gather for Sunday dinner
|
Students gather for worship and dinner at 5 pm on Sunday evenings at the St. Francis House (SFH) Episcopal Student Center on the UW-Madison campus. We invite parishes and other groups to be part of the St. Francis House Sunday dinner ministry. This ministry includes providing dinner for about 15 students and joining us for worship and dinner. Many thanks to those of you who filled up our fall calendar with scrumptious dinners. Now it's time to sign up for spring semester! For more information, please contact Beth Miller at stfrancisuw@gmail.com. Or follow our Doodle link, http://doodle.com/kfa95365vzg9uc5k, and indicate what dates you would like to serve. If you haven't done this before, consider sparing an evening to help St. Francis House build community. Students really appreciate the meals and sharing table fellowship with you...we think you'll enjoy it, too!

Anne Frank's take on giving

December 21st: A Day of Giving Back at St. James, Milwaukee
On Saturday, December 21, 2013, St. James' Episcopal Church will host a day of giving back to the community. On that day, The Gathering Community Meal Program, housed at St. James', will provide a Christmas dinner, from 11:30AM until 12:30PM, for our homeless and hungry neighbors. Approximately 300 people are expected.
The Gathering is a nonprofit Milwaukee-based hunger relief organization focusing on feeding Milwaukee's hungry and homeless. Their Community Meal Programs have been in operation since 1982, serving between 90,000-100,000 home-cooked, free meals annually.
In combination with the lunch, St. James' Church invites The Gathering's guests to join church members for a caroling program in the church sanctuary. The church will be open at 10:30AM; caroling will begin at 11:00AM and continue until Noon. The church is open to all.
The day at St. James' will begin with Red Door Clothes distribution, from 8:30AM until 10:30AM. Red Door Clothes is a shared ministry with Trinity Episcopal Church in Wauwatosa, WI. For the past six years, the clothing bank has offered clothing to our neighbors in need. The bank is open on the first and third Saturdays of each month. December 21 will be no exception.
St. James' will also be distributing sundries on December 21. The sundries include individual-sized bottles of shampoo, lotion, lip balm, soaps, laundry detergent, etc. Parishioners collect sundries throughout the year, offering some of them before the Christmas dinner, at 11:30AM. The program also distributes sundries throughout the year, as well as sharing them with inner city churches in need of stock for their own guests.
There will also be a distribution of Goodie Bags for the holidays. Goodie Bags include hand-held foods and snacks, packaged foods which can be stored in pockets or backpacks. The church has been collecting the snacks for the past few weeks and will be sharing them on December 21 at 11:30AM. The Gathering will also provide their annual treat bags for Gathering guests.
St. James' Episcopal Church has been in existence since 1850. Their outreach programs and their willingness to serve as a site for services to the homeless and hungry have allowed them a voice with the broader neighborhood. They are pleased to be located in the city's downtown, at 833 West Wisconsin Avenue. All are welcome at St. James', where there are no outcasts.
