Experiencing the grace of generosity
St. Alban's younger members gladly  participated in the "Neighbors helping Neighbors" food drive
by Kathy Sonier, St. Alban's, Sussex
We at St. Alban's in Sussex just completed our 2013 "Neighbors helping Neighbors" food drive to benefit the Sussex Food Pantry. Members of our parish spent Saturday, September 7th at the doors of our local Pick-n-Save and Piggly Wiggly handing out a list of items most needed by the pantry and then collecting the donations as shoppers exited the store.  We were able to raise over 1300 items as well as cash to be used for milk, meat or whatever else need dictates .  It was truly amazing to see the support of the local businesses as well as the incredible generosity of the community at large.  In the six hours we spent at the store entrances/exits, we watched people hand over bags of groceries, not just an item or two. We also had the opportunity to see the items make it onto the shelves at the pantry which were quite bare a few days prior. The end of summer is a difficult time for many families, just when the food pantry is often at it's lowest ebb, as well. But not this year!  Thanks to our neighbors, the shelves in our Sussex Food Pantry are full!
St. Francis House celebrates the start of a new academic year at its re-modeled and re-dedicated facilities at UW-Madison
Chaplain and Bishop
The Rev. Jonathan Melton and Bishop Steven Miller
School's started and the students of St. Francis House Episcopal Student Ministry at UW Madison are back in the House! On September 15 we re-dedicated the re-modeled chapel, celebrated the St. Francis House ministry, and installed Chaplain Jonathan Melton. Thanks to all who attended and those who held us in prayer and those who shared their gifts.
The St. Francis House address is now 1011 University Ave., still between Brooks and Mills Streets in Madison.
The students enjoy gathering around the table with you on Sunday nights to share table fellowship after the 5 pm Eucharist. Would your group would like to provide a dinner for about 10 students? For more information about this ministry, please contact Beth Miller at stfrancisuw@gmail.com or sign up at this doodle poll http://doodle.com/kfa95365vzg9uc5k  . Be sure to add contact information as a comment. Thank you for sharing bread with us.

EPISCOPAL SERVICE CORP NEWS

We are thrilled for Intern Andrew Gralton who will be showcasing his short film CINDERS as part of the Milwaukee Show at The 5th Annual Milwaukee Film Festival on Thursday Oct 3 7 pm at the Oriental Theatre.  CINDERS is a tender, beautiful and meditative portrait of how Andrew and his family live and care for their mother who developed early onset Alzheimers at the age of 48. Future plans are to develop CINDERS into a feature length piece with foundation support.

Andrew is currently working as an ESC Intern Videographer with The Hospitality Center at St. Luke's Racine. He will spend the program year creating awareness video production pieces on The Hospitality Center guests and the homeless. This project was made possible due to a generous grant from The Racine Family Foundation to The Hospitality Center for the creative services of our ESC Intern Andrew Gralton.

Please Come to The Milwaukee Show to enjoy and support local filmmakers and our own!

St. Paul's, Milwaukee:
A Greener Faith, A More Vital Parish

by The Rev. Miranda Hassett, for the Commission on Mission & Development

St. Paul's applied for a 2013 Meachem Fund Congregational Development grant to help pay the fees associated with undertaking the GreenFaith certification program (greenfaith.org). This is an exciting undertaking that brings together stewardship of resources, stewardship of creation, Christian formation and missional engagement with the surrounding community. John Hainze of St. Paul's answered some questions about the program. St. Paul's would be happy to share their experiences, and better yet, their journey with other parishes! Check the GreenFaith website to learn more; they have many helpful resources, even if starting the certification process isn't the right step for your parish right now.

How did St Paul's decide to explore GreenFaith?

GreenFaith was involved with the Interfaith Earth Network (part of Milwaukee Interfaith Conference) in developing a conference last fall called Ground for Hope - Wisconsin.  GreenFaith has sponsored a number of these conferences around the US.  This is how we at St. Paul's came to be aware of GreenFaith.  In considering how we might develop a focus on the environment and sustainability at St Paul's, the GreenFaith certification process seems to provide a structured approach with ample support.  And, it provides a very visible process that the parish can rally around.

Trustees of Funds & Endowments offer endowment possibilities to parishes
The Diocese of Milwaukee Trustees of Funds and Endowments would like to talk with parishes about the ways in which endowments can assist them to maintain their mission and ministry -- and how establishing an endowment is not an impossibility for any parish . . . the Trustees have options they would especially  like to discuss with parishes that think they are too small and their budgets too tight to permit them to think about starting an endowment fund.

How can the annual giving campaign change us?

The month of September brings new beginnings - a new season, a new school year, a new program year in congregations throughout the church. I wonder how many people will look toward this year's fall giving campaign as perhaps a new beginning-a new way of looking at money, giving, sharing and generosity.... Click HERE to read more

Church Development Institute begins Nov. 16
by Peggy Bean, Bishop's Assistant for Congregational Development & Transitional Ministry

Our Diocesan Church Development Institute is beginning on November 16, 2013.  This will be our first Saturday - Sunday weekend to accommodate more schedules.

  • This cycle we will be studying culture and how our own church culture as well as the wider culture (including generational issues) impact who we are, how we serve and minister.  We will be looking at ways to assess our impact, gain a better understand of ourselves and look at leadership and how we can transform our communities.
  • As in every cycle our aim is to equip leaders to facilitate a process of transformation, and to build up the capacities and skills of leaders through self-awareness of one's personal impact on others and the organization; to increase knowledge of theories, methods and processes as a way to assess and understand the behavior and development of the congregation; and to give a safe learning environment where one can practice skills in facilitation, feedback, listening and presenting.

Seats are limited so please take a look at the registration form , put your team together and email by Oct. 1st.  Questions contact Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org  or 414-272-3028/ ext. 158.
