What an amazing Diocesan Mission Trip to Kentucky!
by The Rev. Carla McCook
It was a fantastic week, a week of hard work and perspiration, and of unexpected "bless your socks off" moments.
We served the community of Irvine on the top of a mountain. Half of our team spent their days building and doing reconstruction work for some of the local families.
The other half offered a Vacation Bible School to the children, moms and grandmothers. I had never had this kind of VBS experience before. I'm accustomed to the parents dropping off the children and returning to pick up. On this occasion the parents and grandparents stayed for the full day. What an awesome opportunity to serve not just the children but the adults, too. And these creative, strong women shared with us.
Our group has already been asked to return next summer. I don't know what the team will decide at their August 26th meeting. But if you want to serve in mission work the team I took with me can certainly lead you in doing it!
Again, we thank the Prayer Partners - no injuries or illness and in part due to your prayers.
Thank you to the individuals and churches that sent the many boxes filled with school supplies! While we were there we were already sharing supplies with the college students going off to school.
Thank you to the families who allowed us to take your family member on our trip for a week.

Clergy shirts needed for Newala's new priests & deacons
 |
Nine of the newly ordained clergy are pictured with visitors from the Diocese of Milwaukee
|
Do you know of clergy shirts which are going unused? The Bishop of Newala would gladly receive them for the dozen new priests and deacons (including the first African woman in his diocese!) whom he will ordain this winter. Although cloth and tailoring is available, both cost money and so people cannot always obtain them.
Bring clergy shirts, collars and buttons to the pre-convention hearings or to Diocesan Convention on October 19.
Address questions to Paula Harris, Chairperson of Newala Companion Diocese Committee. at stlukesmadisonrector@gmail.com .

Camp Webb 2013: Living the Adventure with Living Compass
 by The Rev. Carla McCook
Camp Webb was a SUCCESS!
We had 34 registered campers!
We didn't go over budget!
These are big success points for Camp Webb as we've been working hard to make camp a purposeful ministry in our diocese.
I have to thank my star Program Director, Sarah Hoff, for her 8th year of ministry, leadership and guidance.
I've already heard from families that their campers are still talking about the fun and the things they learned at camp this summer.
We truly lived an excellent week of adventure: lakefront, campfires, climbing wall and ropes course, CanoEucharist, daily worship, crafts, and FUN!
Our theme this summer walked us through Luke 7:27 "Love the Lord your God with all your body, mind, heart & soul and love your neighbor as yourself."
Each day we took just a piece of Christ's commandment and discovered together how we can obey. Camp Counselors April Carstens, Josh Fuher and Haley Miller made a great week for Intermediate Campers. The High school leadership camp delved deeply into the learning with seminarians: Lars Skoglund and Ezgi Saribay using the Living Compass workbooks, "Living Well with Living Compass for Emerging Adults and Teens." This curriculum is available for confirmation classes and for teen/young adult formation classes from Living Compass.org.
The dates for Camp Webb 2014 are already set!
Staff Week - June 15-20, 2014
Campers' Week (Intermediate & Leadership Camps) June 22-27, 2014.
Mark your calendars now. Plan to register early as this year we were full - you want to avoid a waiting list! Registration Opens December 15, 2013.
You can Camp all year long! Follow Webbster, our Camp Webb goose on Camp Webb Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/#!/CampWebbWisconsin

You are invited to attend the next Madison area Julian Gathering on September 11th
Madison-Area Julian Gathering
Wednesday, September 11, 7:15 - 9:00 PM
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church
6205 University Avenue
Madison, WI 53705
Julian's era was one of turmoil and crisis. Contemporary reports indicate that at least half the population of Norwich died from the Plague; the clergy and undertakers could not keep up with the dead bodies. Meanwhile, disease killed the cattle, and harvests failed. In 1381, when Julian was thirty-nine, people became so desperate they rose up in a revolt, looting the churches and monasteries.
During Julian's lifetime, John Wyclif was also preaching against the corruption in the Church; his translation of the Bible into the common language of English brought down on him papal accusations of heresy. Wyclif and his followers, the Lollards, believed God should be made directly available to ordinary people, without the intercession of the clergy. The clerical hierarchy was so incensed that the Bishop of Norwich received permission from Rome to execute any Lollards he captured. Wyclif's followers were burned alive in a pit less than a mile from Julian's cell.Meanwhile, the larger world beyond Norfolk and England was also in a state of upheaval. Five years before Julian was born, in 1337, the Hundred Years War between England and France had begun, and it would continue throughout her lifetime. The Great Schism split the Church in 1377, with one pope in France, the other in Rome.
And in the midst of all this, Julian came to believe unshakably that "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."
