Presiding Bishop's Statement on Supreme Court rulings on Prop. 8 and DOMA cases.
pbkjs
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following on today's United States Supreme Court rulings on DOMA and Proposition 8.

The Episcopal Church is presently engaged in a period of study and dialogue about the nature of Christian marriage.  This work is moving forward, with faithful people of many different perspectives seeking together to discern the movement of the Holy Spirit.  However, our Church has taken the position that neither federal nor state governments should create constitutional prohibitions that deny full civil rights and protections to gay and lesbian persons, including those available to different-sex couples through the civic institution of marriage.

Accordingly, I welcome today's decision of the United States Supreme Court that strikes down the 17-year-old law prohibiting federal recognition of same-sex civil marriages granted by the states.  read more

A message from St. Francis House
Fr. Melton and friend

Dear friends from across our diocese,

After years of planning and a year-plus of construction, St. Francis House is set to move back into our old/new space the week of July 15! The move represents the culmination of a lot of hard work by many people, as well as a visionary commitment to campus ministry on the part of the diocese.  If you or a group from your church would like to help with any part of the move-in (actual moving, unpacking, etc.), please call (608-514-1734) or email Fr. Jonathan at chaplain@stfrancisuw.org .  We would welcome your help!

In the fall, once we are settled (or at least unpacked!), we will open the house for some special opportunities to come see the good things happening at SFH. Keep an eye out for these dates, and please make plans to join us!

It is an exciting time to be an Episcopalian in campus ministry, and SFH is blessed with remarkable students living out the Gospel call to love God and those around us. Thank you for your prayers and support of young adults throughout our diocese.

Chaplain, St. Francis House

Camp Webb 2013:
Living the Adventure

with Living Compass

Camp Webb had an extremely successful season this year. Our staff met together for training and final planning and preparations during the week of June 9th. On Sunday, June 16th we welcomed a full roster of campers this year. Thirty-four (34) campers were registered for our camp week. Amazing!

We took our theme from Living Compass materials, Living Well with Living Compass for Emerging Adults and Teens. Our scripture text was from Luke 7:27, Love the Lord your God with all your strength, mind, heart and soul and love your neighbor as yourself. Each day focused on just one of those concepts.

Our Leadership campers (8th-12th graders) used the journal that goes along with the course and had great opportunity for diving deeper into learning and conversation and sharing. Their team leaders were Ezgi Saribay and Lars Skoglund, seminarians from Nashotah House. Our Intermediate campers (3rd - 7th graders) were led by Josh Fuher, April Carstens, and Haley Miller. Each of these campers took a journal home with them at the end of the week to study with their families at home.

We are already in the works for planning for next summer. We want to say a big, THANK YOU! to the many individuals and parishes that gave scholarship funds to support our campers.

The Mission Trip is set to go!

We've got our vans rented, t-shirts designed and maps prepared.  We're receiving the School Supplies collection at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, Greendale through June 27th. (7255 W Grange Ave, Greendale).

We want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has been a Prayer Partner and continues to pray for our team and for the people of Irvine. Half of our team will be leading a Vacation Bible School using the Living Compass for Emerging Adults materials. The other half of our team will be on a construction site rebuilding roofs and damaged homes.

Our 12 team members are Mike Brooker (St. Matthew's, Kenosha), Dawn & Michael Caldwell (Zion, Oconomowoc), Kevin & Patrick Carroll (All Saints' Cathedral), Steve Cook (St. Luke's, Milwaukee), Bryan & Matthew Luegtten, Mark Moore, & Kris Reed (St. Thomas, Greendale), Katie Weidinger (St. Matthias, Waukesha) and Carla McCook (Nicholson House/St. Matthias).

You can follow our trip at my blog post: http://mccookblog.wordpress.com/

Rest in Peace . . .
Many in the diocese will remember Sr. Dorcas, CSM and The Rev. Glenn Derby, former rector of St. Alban's Sussex.  Both entered the resurrection life this week.  Fr. Derby is now living in Minnesota, where he has been canonically resident since leaving the Diocese of Milwaukee in the late 1990's to accept a call there.  Additional information is available in his obituary in the Brainerd Dispatch.  Sr. Dorcas, a longtime member of the Community of St. Mary, has lived in Milwaukee at St. John's on the Lake retirement community in recent years. Funeral services followed by a reception will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 29 at St. John's on the Lake at 1840 North Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.  Please hold the families of Sr. Dorcas and Fr. Derby, and the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary, in your prayers.

The eight MDG goals
WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?

A Note from the Commission on Global Reconciliation

Each year our diocese allocates 0.7% of the diocesan budget to support work done to achieve MDGs by parishes and entities in the diocese.

8 GOALS

1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER

2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION

3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN

4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY

5. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH6.

6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES

7. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT

8. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Last year, contributions were sent to 2 projects that are supported by congregations within our diocese. It's time again to consider distribution of the 0.7% to projects that work toward the achievement of the MDGs.

If your congregation is involved in such a project, you may apply for additional funding from the diocese.

Packer Leroy Butler visits St. Dunstan's June 30

Last month an article in E-NEWS reported on a decision made by St. Dunstan's, Madison to raise funds to bring (retied) Packer Leroy Butler to the parish to make an anti-bullying presentation after an unnamed church cancelled his appearance for tweeting congratulations to Jason Collins, the first active NBA player to come out as gay.  For those wondering how those plans are proceeding, an article in Tuesday's Wisconsin State Journal reports that the Dean Clinic is making a substantial donation to St. Dunstan's fund raising drive and that Butler's appearance has been set for June 30.  See St. Dunstan's website for details or to donate.
