A prayer for all of us . . .
Earlier this week, one of Grace Church, Madison's neighbors, Bob, a homeless man who slept at night on the benches near Grace, was senselessly attacked and beaten nearly to death.  While it was reported in the media yesterday that he had succumbed to his injuries, other sources indicate that he is still alive,  albeit in critical condition.   Last  night, a vigil was held at the Capitol, where the rector of Grace Church, Madison, The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Grieser, offered the following prayer.

A prayer for Bob - a prayer for all of us

Gracious God, whose son Jesus Christ was born in a stable because there was no room in an inn, whose family fled violence as refugees in a foreign land, who said, "foxes have holes, birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head," we pray this evening for our friend, neighbor, our brother Bob, who was attacked while sleeping and now lies in a hospital bed near death. We ask that you surround him with your loving presence and give him healing and strength. We pray too for all of those who are providing for his care: doctors, nurses and others who tend his body, that they may have the necessary skill and wisdom but above all compassion as they care for him.

We pray too for the man who attacked him, that he may seek forgiveness for whatever led him to this heinous act, and that he too might know and experience your love and grace. We lift up to you all of those who are sleeping on the streets, in their cars or in shelters this evening that their hope is kindled, their faith renewed, and that they might experience the warm embrace of a just community.

We pray for all of us here, and all of those who are with us in spirit, that we may be renewed by your grace and power to speak more boldly and act more resolutely on behalf of those in our community who have no place to lay their head. We pray for this neighborhood, the city and the county, that we may create here a community in which everyone has safe shelter, food to sustain them, and we all can flourish together.

All this we ask in the name of the one who stretched his arms of love on the hard wood of the cross, even Jesus Christ, Amen.

Pickett Wall, John Reese ordained to diaconate
(L-R)The Rev. Pickett Wall, Bishop Miller, The Rev. John Reese
In a beautiful liturgy at St. Paul's, Milwaukee on June 15th, Bishop Miller ordained Pickett Wall and John Reese to the Sacred Order of Deacons.  John Reese, a vocational deacon, will carry out his diaconal ministry within the Diocese of Arkansas, where he has recently moved.  Pickett Wall, a transitional deacon, will serve as Chaplain at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield.  Please keep the new deacons in your prayers as they begin their ordained ministries.
Rest in Peace . . .
Many in the diocese will remember Sr. Dorcas, CSM and The Rev. Glenn Derby, former rector of St. Alban's Sussex.  Both entered the resurrection life this week.  Fr. Derby is now living in Minnesota, where he has been canonically resident since leaving the Diocese of Milwaukee in the late 1990's to accept a call there.  Additional information is available in his obituary in the Brainerd Dispatch.  Sr. Dorcas, a longtime member of the Community of St. Mary, has lived in Milwaukee at St. John's on the Lake retirement community in recent years. Funeral services followed by a reception will take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 29 at St. John's on the Lake at 1840 North Prospect Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202.  Please hold the families of Sr. Dorcas and Fr. Derby, and the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary, in your prayers.
Resurrection, Mukwonago celebrates with community, supports Hospitality Center
Resurrection's parade marchers
The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection gathered together to participate in the Mukwonago Summerfeste Parade on June 16th. This is the congregations 10th year of participation and for the last several years we have done a DOGS FOR DADS theme in celebration of Father's Day, grilling and serving hot dogs to the dads who line the parade route. A replica of our "little church" where we have been actively collecting blankets for distribution to the  Hospitality Center in Racine is part of our float as well as our grilling stations. A good time was had by all in attendance and we would like to extend thanks to our cheering section that was situated in front of our church building on Main Street.
Community of Hope: New class forming now

Community of Hope, an international organization based on Benedictine spirituality, trains and supports lay pastoral care givers to provide a ministry of presence in homes, hospitals, nursing facilities, shelters, jails, and other places. COH is designed to enhance existing ministries. Members are encouraged to find their place of ministry according to their spiritual gifts and ministry passion.

Next Community of Hope Training
The training will be held at St. Bartholomew. It requires a 12 week commitment on Wednesday evenings beginning September 4th. Two practice visits to Waukesha Memorial Hospital will be scheduled during the middle weeks of the training. A commissioning service will follow the classes. Training sessions are led by a variety of experienced pastoral caregivers, professionals, chaplains, and presenters.

The eight MDG goals
WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU DOING?

A Note from the Commission on Global Reconciliation

Each year our diocese allocates 0.7% of the diocesan budget to support work done to achieve MDGs by parishes and entities in the diocese.

8 GOALS

1. ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY & HUNGER

2. ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL PRIMARY EDUCATION

3. PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER WOMEN

4. REDUCE CHILD MORTALITY

5. IMPROVE MATERNAL HEALTH6.

6. COMBAT HIV/AIDS, MALARIA AND OTHER DISEASES

7. DEVELOP A GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT

8. ENSURE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Last year, contributions were sent to 2 projects that are supported by congregations within our diocese. It's time again to consider distribution of the 0.7% to projects that work toward the achievement of the MDGs.

If your congregation is involved in such a project, you may apply for additional funding from the diocese.

Applications are due July 1, 2013. For more information, please see our Letter to Parishes on the Diocesan website or contact:

Packer Leroy Butler visits St. Dunstan's June 30

Last month an article in E-NEWS reported on a decision made by St. Dunstan's, Madison to raise funds to bring (retied) Packer Leroy Butler to the parish to make an anti-bullying presentation after an unnamed church cancelled his appearance for tweeting congratulations to Jason Collins, the first active NBA player to come out as gay.  For those wondering how those plans are proceeding, an article in Tuesday's Wisconsin State Journal reports that the Dean Clinic is making a substantial donation to St. Dunstan's fund raising drive and that Butler's appearance has been set for June 30.  See St. Dunstan's website for details or to donate.
