Sunrise Hospitality Center opens

Opening its doors on March 6, 2013, through a partnership with three area churches, (St John the Baptist Episcopal Church - Portage WI, Bethlehem Lutheran Church - Portage WI, Bonnet Prairie Lutheran Church - Rio WI,), the Sunrise Center provides a place for people to gather, sit and chat, in addition to locating and providing community assistance information, (assistance with job seeking, housing information, personal skills, veterans' programs), and a wide range of other programs.

Located at 211 West Pleasant Street, Portage Wisconsin in St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church's Cooper Hall, the center is a non-denominational outreach facility, open to everyone in the community, which is currently staffed by Rev. Joan Wittrock, Bonnet Prairie/St. John the Baptist), Janice Petersen R.N. (Bethlehem Lutheran), and other volunteers. The center is open 9am-Noon every Wednesday.

July 3, 2013 kicks off the centers Financial Information series, put on by Bank Mutual of Portage, WI. For more information about this series and other center programs, please call 608-742-6054 on Wednesday between 9am and noon, or leave a message at 608-742-8502 (Bethlehem Lutheran) or St. John the Baptist, Portage (608-742-6054)

Volunteers are also always welcome at the center. If you are interested in volunteering, please call either of the telephone numbers above.

The center is based on a similar center in Racine WI.

Packer Leroy Butler visits St. Dunstan's June 30

Last month an article in E-NEWS reported on a decision made by St. Dunstan's, Madison to raise funds to bring (retied) Packer Leroy Butler to the parish to make an anti-bullying presentation after an unnamed church cancelled his appearance for tweeting congratulations to Jason Collins, the first active NBA player to come out as gay.  For those wondering how those plans are proceeding, an article in Tuesday's Wisconsin State Journal reports that the Dean Clinic is making a substantial donation to St. Dunstan's fund raising drive and that Butler's appearance has been set for June 30.  See St. Dunstan's website for details or to donate.

utologo Diocese receives UTO grant

Thanks to all the parishes who continue to have a United Thank Offering Ingathering once or twice a year. The "little blue boxes" are obviously in many homes and offices across the diocese.

For the 3rd year in a row the Diocese of Milwaukee has received a United Thank Offering Grant. in 2011 we received a grant for the Diocese of Newala to equip the maternity ward and clinic that they were opening. We also received a grant for the Sunshine Club of Sun Prairie for a commercial dishwasher.  They serve community meals. In 2012 we received a grant for 14 computers for Our Next Generation for their after-school program. This year we just heard about the grant below for the Diocese of Newala for a water holding tank.

Women of Newala

A grant of $7,965.00 has been awarded by the United Thank Offering which will be used to construct an underground tank to hold harvested rainwater, helping to supply the needs of people in the community of Mkoma in the new Diocese of Newala in Tanzania.

The water harvested will provide safe drinking water, thus improving the health of the community and reducing the need to rely on other sources that are dependent on intermittent power supply. This is especially important during the dry season.

The United Thank Offering is a program that has worked for well over 100 years to provide a way of women (and men) to give thanks for the blessings we receive every day.  From good report cards, to a new grandchild, from an "all-clear" diagnosis to a warm, sunny day - coins (and folding money) go into the little blue box of the UTO to be gathered once or twice a year for grants to be given. This year the amount granted is $1,517,280.81
