Let us remember those in Oklahoma

Dear Friends in Christ,

Our hearts go out to the people of Moore, Oklahoma in the wake of the devastating tornado that hit that community this week. Whenever we see such loss and devastation there is a desire within us to want to respond. One way we can respond is through a monetary gift to   Episcopal Relief and Development.

Elsewhere in this e-news you will read about another opportunity to respond being led by Fr. Michael Caldwell and the people of Zion, Oconomowoc. I am certain we will learn of other opportunities to respond in the days ahead.

I ask all of you to join me in prayer for the bishop and people of the Diocese of Oklahoma as they minister in the days ahead. Pray that they may have grace and courage to serve and witness faithfully in the days ahead.

Yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller

Bishop of Milwaukee

THANK YOU!

We can  help St. Dunstan's bring Packer Leroy Butler (retired) to Madison!

(From a letter by The Rev. Dr. Miranda Hassett, rector of St. Dunstan's, Madison)  I'm writing to share some exciting news with you. Some of you may have heard that Jason Collins recently became the first NBA player to come out as gay. LeRoy Butler, a former Green Bay Packers star, sent a message of congratulations to Collins by way of Twitter. Butler had been scheduled to do an anti-bullying presentation at an unnamed church. That church pressured Butler to withdraw his support for Collins, and when he refused, they cancelled his appearance.

Like many Christian leaders, I saw that story go by and thought, "Oh, no - another story that will reinforce the widely-held public view that Christians are intolerant and exclusionary. I wish we could invite Butler to come speak here!"   continued . . .

St. Julian of Norwich: 14th Century feminist?  14th Century heretic?  No, although a reader might at first think so.  14th Century psychologist?  Sort of . . . she understood the human heart and, through her sixteen revelations of Jesus, she understood the heart of God.  Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time."  Come to one of our monthly meetings and find out why -- and learn about contemplative prayer.  We'd love to see you.  For more information, contact Susan Fiore at [email protected] or (608) 845-2413.

Application available for parishes seeking diocesan financial assistance (due June 15)

From Peggy Bean, Bishop's Assistant for Congregational Development:  The Commission on Mission and Development is tasked with working with congregations who are aided parishes, parishes facing serious difficulties or those who want to improve their leadership or ministry.  The 2014 Application for Financial Assistance is now available. Please review the application and be sure to include the necessary documentation if applying. The due date is June 15, 2013. Even if you are not planning on applying for aid we still encourage you to take a look at the application and answer the questions with your vestry. It is a good way to assess how you are living into the mission God is calling your community to.
