Outreach at St. John's, Portage
Sunrise Center's logo

St. John the Bapitst Episcopal Church in Portage  has a long-standing tradition of identifying, coordinating, and collaborating with other community agencies to assist individuals and families in the Portage community. Past and current activities include the Portage Food Pantry, the Community Meal, the River Haven Family shelter, and now includes a men's shelter.

River Haven, the local family shelter in Portage, had been looking for a men's shelter site for several years. After numerous discussions and plans, we are happy to report in November 2012, the first men's shelter, in a five county area was opened, in the rectory of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church. Several of our parishioners volunteer at both the family shelter as well as the men's shelter. 10 men have been served at the Men's shelter since mid -November.

Another new project we are excited about is the Sunrise Hospitality Center.   Read more . . .

Presiding Bishop's testimony on gun violence
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has submitted written testimony to the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights, chaired by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, for the hearing on "Proposals to reduce gun violence: protecting our communities while respecting the Second Amendment."

"I urge lawmakers to press for comprehensive and universal background checks for firearm ownership, regardless of where and how a gun is purchased; for bans on the availability to civilians of assault rifles and high-capacity magazines; and for policies designed to better regulate the manufacture of guns," the Presiding Bishop states in her testimony. "The Episcopal Church also supports the highest level of accountability for violation of all existing laws pertaining to violence in our midst."

An Evening of Arts at St. Michael's, Racine

Saturday, February 23, 2013

7:00pm until 9:00pm

An Evening of Arts was conceived in 2011 as an event to celebrate who we are - how we create ourselves through God's gifts of the arts. We offer this evening as a way to thank God for the gifts of creativity, imagination, and hard work. Through the creation of art, we most reflect God's image and nature. Evening of Arts has a vision to bring local artists to St. Michael's Church to celebrate and expose art in our community. Many of the displayed pieces will be available for purchase.

Light refreshments, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for a free will donation. Special performance by Time after Thyme, whose music is played with a bit of Irish.  For the first time, we will have art with an international flair, with Haitian Art (and coffee) available for viewing and purchase.

There is no cost to attend. For further information, contact St. Michael's Church, info@stmichaelsracine.com  or 262-639-2057.

Fun and family time for Parents, Grandparents, Teens and Children - All ages and sizes of family! Take this day to spend some quality family time together, learn together, play, eat and make lasting memories together!

"Spend a day exploring how to live out our faith in one of the most familiar and most challenging contexts: our family life. During the day, kids, youth, and parents will explore central themes as separate groups; then come together as families to eat, share, play and create.

In the morning session, we'll explore the voices we use in our household: How do we talk to each other? How well are we connected? Who gets a say? How well do we listen?

In the afternoon session, we'll look at the concept of "discipline" and how it relates to "discipleship" - everyone in our family is learning and growing; how can we do it together, in love?

We hope you'll end the day with some new tools and new ideas for daily life!"

Join the Diocesan Mission Trip to Irvine, Kentucky,
St. Timothy's Appalachian Ministries June 30-July 6

This summer the diocese is offering its first ever Diocesan Mission Trip. We are going to the Appalachian community of Irvine, Kentucky in the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. We will be working through St. Timothy's Episcopal Ministries and staying in St. Timothy's Ministry Housing.
We will be working on two separate projects while there. The first is roof and home repairs. The second is providing Vacation Bible School for the children of the community. The trip is open to all adults and youth who will be age 13 at time of the trip, entering 7th grade in the fall of 2013.

In addition to team members, we need Diocesan Prayer Partners, people who will promise to pray for team members and for the community we are going to serve. We are also collecting school supplies to take to the community of Irvine. Many tornadoes last spring meant that many schools and families did not have all the things they needed to start the 2012 school year. We want to make sure that this won't happen again in 2013.   more info - application

Vestry Leadership Day!

Vestry leadership Day is scheduled for February 23rd and March 16th from 8:30 until 4:00 at Zion in Oconomowoc.  Seating is limited and we have a cap of 3 from each congregation.  The reason for the cap per session (you can send 3 to each one) is because what we heard you say is that it was in the conversation with others where you learned, and you wanted more time to share.  Now you will have it.  You will also have more specifics on roles and responsiblities of vestry; a vestry manual and how to use it; effective meetings; and building community.  We look forward to seeing you so  sign up now .

For Treasurer's we have a session for you too.  On Feb. 23rd and March 16th from 8:30 until 2 at Zion in Oconomowoc.  This will be a great session to network with others, learn about financial programs as well as reports, and payroll - using a service is more economical than you think.  Patricia Tucker from Church Pension Group will be with us to discuss pension and payroll options.  She will stay longer and answer specific question if you like. Sign up now .

utologo United Thank Offering Applications Available

This year the United Thank Offering Applications have a different time schedule and a somewhat different format. The information is on a new website www.utochange.org. You will find the application there along with the criteria and the 2 marks of mission which are being addressed with this year's grants. Much of the information needed is quite straight forward, but if questions arise, please ask. Each diocese is allowed to put in one application for the diocese, a program that has some connection to the diocese or to a particular parish. Each diocese can also put in an application for a companion diocese or project abroad with which they are involved. Two years ago the diocese received a grant for $11,000 plus for materials to reopen a maternity unit and clinic in the Diocese of Newala. This past year the diocese received $4,000 plus for computers for the after school program of Our Next Generation in Milwaukee.

Our time schedule is to have all the applications in hand at the diocesan office by Friday February 15th. They are then reviewed by a diocesan selection committee. Their recommendations are sent on to the Bishop who will act on their recommendations and the application will be sent to the national church no later than Thursday, February 28th.

Please share this information with groups who might be interested in applying for a grant. If you have any questions, please contact Connie Ott, diocesan UTO coordinator at cott@chorus.net  or 608-798-3688.

One more time . . . THANK YOU for forwarding this newsletter to parishioners and others who may be  interested and for sending YOUR news/events / photos to info@diomil.org !
See you next week!

Sincerely,

Barb
