Donna Holmes, parish administer, reports that both ministries benefit greatly from your generosity, which in turn will allow them to make life a little easier for those who live around the edges in inner-city Milwaukee. Living Compass Advent Program & Resource
Embracing and Living the Love of God in Advent: An Advent Program and Resource from Living Compass
Advent is often said to be the favorite season in the church by many people. It is a time when we begin to think and plan for gatherings of family and friends, and ways we will show our love for those we love in many ways: preparing special food, decorating, buying or making gifts, singing certain songs, and eating together just to name a few. This beautiful season can also be a time when we prepare ourselves for Christmas, for welcoming in our hearts once again, the Love of God in Christ. We may wonder how we can do this, or perhaps how to do this better. After all, it isn't necessarily easy with all the other things we have to do to prepare for our Christmas celebrations. Jesus himself reminds us that we can welcome him and love him with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength (Luke 7:27). It is Jesus' own words we will be exploring in this 4 session program about how this Advent we can love God with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength and in so doing welcome God's love into our busy world especially at Christmas, and every day.
This Advent program is a resource of Living Compass. In addition to the 4 sessions which can be used individually for small or large groups or Bible Studies, or for a retreat, Living Compass offers a companion book of readings for each day of Advent. This booklet can also stand alone as a personal daily devotional and makes a great gift. You can order the Advent program and/or the companion book Living Love: Daily Readings for the Season of Advent by emailing Edith Braeger at edith@livingcompass.org . |

Hospitality Center Fundraiser set for December 8th
This year's Hospitality fundraiser - Homeless for the Holidays - will be held on Saturday, December 8 beginning at 6:00pm at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Racine.
Last year, Robert Roedema from Thrivent Financial Bank and I stayed outside one night in the frigid cold for (6:00 pm until 6:00am) for our first fundraiser. Robert and I will again be outside all night (12 hours) beginning at 6:00 pm on December 8, 2012. We invite "everyone and everybody" to join us for all or part of the night and to experience some of the emotions and to feel the cold that our homeless sisters and brothers experience and feel every cold night.
Our deep appreciation is extended to Thrivent Financial Bank and Racine County Chapter of Thrivent. More specifically, Thrivent Financial Bank has generously offered to match financial contributions received, dollar for dollar, up to five thousand dollars ($5,000). Racine County Chapter of Thrivent has generously offered to match contributions received, dollar for dollar, for up to four thousand dollars ($4,000), which is a grand total of nine thousand dollars ($9,000) in matching funds.
The Hospitality Center began in May of 2011 in direct response to a community need; providing a safe place for Racine's homeless, near homeless, alone and lonely to "drop in" for much needed rest, refreshments and relationship. Located at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Racine, the Hospitality Center provides hospitality without an agenda - no strings attached.
Please participate, contribute, and pass this along to "everyone and everybody." Please see our flyer for more info! Please use our poster to help publicize!
On behalf of our sisters and brothers who are homeless, near homeless, alone and lonely, thank you for your ever-present interest, encouragement, commitment, and support.
Finally, CALL ME should questions arise or for further information.
The Reverend Kevin P. Stewart (414) 405-5619

 Julian Gathering at
St. Dunstan's, Madison
Wednesday, November 14 from
7:15 - 9:00 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Madison, Wisconsin
Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and anchoress. [What's an anchoress? In the Middle Ages, certain women and men chose to live a life intensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, called an anchorhold, attached to a parish church.] Little is known about Julian's life, but she wrote a book, as far as we know the first in English written by a woman, about a series of revelations which opened her to the depths of God's unconditional love for us in Jesus Christ. Nearly forgotten for 600 years, Julian's insights and gentle wisdom are becoming ever more widely known and appreciated. Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time."
Julian prayed often in silence, and at a Julian Gathering we support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality. These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org). They are open to all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's book. At the beginning of each meeting, brief instruction on the practice of contemplative prayer is offered. We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 14. For additional information, contact Susan Fiore at (608) 845-2413 or slfiore@mac.com. |
One more time . . . THANK YOU for forwarding this newsletter to parishioners and others who may be interested and for sending YOUR news/events / photos to info@diomil.org ! See you next week! Sincerely, Barb
