Sojourner Truth House helps break cycle of domestic violence

Letter by The Rev. Seth Dietrich, rector of Christ Church, Whirefish Bay, reprinted from the parish's October 25, 2012 e-newsletter
Many of us have been deeply saddened by yet another mass-shooting in the Milwaukee area. Zina Haughton and two others were killed, and four more people were wounded by Haughton's chronically abusive husband. The tragedy has brought to light the domestic violence crisis that has engulfed Milwaukee for the past several years. In 2010, 29% of all homicides in Wisconsin were the result of domestic violence. There were also nearly 40,000 reports of child abuse. There is a 70% co-occurence of violence in families between domestic violence and child abuse. Children who experience violence in the home are at risk of continuing the cycle.
Many of those at Christ Church have been involved for a long time in Sojourner Family Peace Center, the largest domestic violence agency in the state. Sojourner is in the midst of rallying support to build a new Peace Center in partnership with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The Peace Center (also known as the Family Justice Center) aims to fundamentally change the cycle of violence in Milwaukee by providing a single location for legal advocacy, client-focused services and health care services. Such a center not only reduces human suffering but it saves the community money by dealing with the problem in a pro-active manner. Christ Church's own Kent Lovern, has been a driving force behind bringing this proven Family Justice Center model to Milwaukee.
A time will come for us to provide leadership for this new Peace Center, and I have no doubt that Christ Church will step up to that call. Until that time, consider making a donation to Sojourner Family Peace Center so that it might continue to shelter and fight for those who are most vulnerable. |
Celebrating Mission
and Development
by The Rev. David Huxley, Campus Minister
Each Monday evening during the academic year, the Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry at the UW-Whitewater offers a free spaghetti dinner to college students. The meal is served at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Whitewater, in partnership with the South-Central Synod of the ELCA in Wisconsin. Attendance at the last two meals has been 283 and 276, respectively, with well over 1200 meals being served already this semester, including feeding our wonderful volunteers.
Our current meal per student cost is approximately $1.22. Our menu is the same every week: Spaghetti and meatballs with sauce, French bread, salad and dressing, and ice cream with assorted syrups for dessert. For beverages, we offer powdered lemonade and water. We advertise once, at the beginning of each semester, in the student newspaper. We also post fliers on campus and connect with students and volunteers through our FaceBook page, which you can access and like via Whitewater Campus Ministry-LECM. At St. Luke's, Whitewater, we have partnered with the Commission of Mission & Development in growing our campus ministry. We are very grateful to the Diocese of Milwaukee and to each of you for your prayers and financial support. It is hard to describe in words how grateful our students are for the meals that they receive. We invite you to visit and "Come and See" if you have the chance.
A few things we have learned along the way-
- That our food usage is greater when we serve the kids, rather than allowing them to serve themselves, especially when comparing the use of pasta, sauce and salad.
- That guys outnumber girls by almost a 3 to 1 ratio. (The ladies are beginning to catch on).
- That even at our best attended meal (283), we have less than two and a half percent of the total UW-Whitewater student enrollments! The implications for growing the meal are somewhat mind-boggling!

The Rev. Kevin Stewart with a visitor to
the Hospitality Center. | Hospitality Center Fundraiser set for December 8th
This year's Hospitality fundraiser - Homeless for the Holidays - will be held on Saturday, December 8 beginning at 6:00pm at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Racine.
Last year, Robert Roedema from Thrivent Financial Bank and I stayed outside one night in the frigid cold for (6:00 pm until 6:00am) for our first fundraiser. Robert and I will again be outside all night (12 hours) beginning at 6:00 pm on December 8, 2012. We invite "everyone and everybody" to join us for all or part of the night and to experience some of the emotions and to feel the cold that our homeless sisters and brothers experience and feel every cold night.
Our deep appreciation is extended to Thrivent Financial Bank and Racine County Chapter of Thrivent. More specifically, Thrivent Financial Bank has generously offered to match financial contributions received, dollar for dollar, up to five thousand dollars ($5,000). Racine County Chapter of Thrivent has generously offered to match contributions received, dollar for dollar, for up to four thousand dollars ($4,000), which is a grand total of nine thousand dollars ($9,000) in matching funds.
The Hospitality Center began in May of 2011 in direct response to a community need; providing a safe place for Racine's homeless, near homeless, alone and lonely to "drop in" for much needed rest, refreshments and relationship. Located at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Racine, the Hospitality Center provides hospitality without an agenda - no strings attached.
Please participate, contribute, and pass this along to "everyone and everybody." Please see our flyer for more info! Please use our poster to help publicize!
On behalf of our sisters and brothers who are homeless, near homeless, alone and lonely, thank you for your ever-present interest, encouragement, commitment, and support.
Finally, CALL ME should questions arise or for further information.
The Reverend Kevin P. Stewart (414) 405-5619

Julian Gathering at
St. Dunstan's, Madison
Wednesday, November 14 from
7:15 - 9:00 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Madison, Wisconsin
Julian of Norwich was a 15th Century English mystic and anchoress. [What's an anchoress? In the Middle Ages, certain women and men chose to live a life intensely devoted to prayer permanently enclosed in a small room, called an anchorhold, attached to a parish church.] Little is known about Julian's life, but she wrote a book, as far as we know the first in English written by a woman, about a series of revelations which opened her to the depths of God's unconditional love for us in Jesus Christ. Nearly forgotten for 600 years, Julian's insights and gentle wisdom are becoming ever more widely known and appreciated. Thomas Merton called her "the greatest theologian for our time."
Julian prayed often in silence, and at a Julian Gathering we support each other in the practice of contemplative prayer and contemplative spirituality. These gatherings are initiated and supported by the Order of Julian of Norwich (www.orderofjulian.org). They are open to all who want to deepen their life of faith through the practice of contemplative prayer, for beginners as well as those already practicing. Each meeting includes time for contemplative prayer, fellowship, and reading/discussion of Julian's book. At the beginning of each meeting, brief instruction on the practice of contemplative prayer is offered. We meet the second Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 9 PM at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, 6205 University Ave., Madison, WI. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 14. Registration for Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI) 2012-2013
As I watched the 2012 summer Olympics there was a lot of talk about team and the importance of team in success. The women's coach on the swimming team gave each athlete a tag with one side indicating the London 2012 Olympics and on the flip side their individual event.
This is not that different from Diocesan Church Development Institute (DCDI). We train parish teams in leadership development. We are all working toward bringing people to know God through Jesus, yet we have our own individual and community ways of doing that. Our goal is to help people ask questions, look at things in new ways and to be intentional in their planning. If you would like to be a part of our next training cycle the time is now to sign up. We have 20 seats available.
This next cycle will be the Friday - Saturday format but cycle 2 will be a Saturday - Sunday format. This new format gives us the opportunity to invite people who cannot take a Friday off and lets us experience Morning Prayer not only at DCDI but also at our home parishes if we choose. We will have training opportunities this coming year on leading Morning Prayer.
- Our DCDI dates are: Cycle 1 begins on Nov. 1- 2, 2012; Feb. 8 - 9; April 12 - 13; June 7 - 8.
- Cycle 2 begins on November 16 - 17, 2013; Feb. 8 - 9; April 5 - 6; May 17 - 18, 2014.
Another new opportunity will be for all those we have graduated from Diocesan CDI to meet on Saturdays from 10 until 2 to share with one another what they been working on and to practice as well as learn new theories, methods and skills. We will meet at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Madison while DCDI is in session and preregistration will be required.
To register for our next Cycle:
Email Peggy Bean at bean@diomil.org with the following information: Name, contact information, who you will be attending with you or who has attended from your congregation, and in 25 words or less why you want to participate in this training and what you hope to learn.
