THE TINY WHEELS OF INDUSTRY
PART TWO: Picking up speed!
Last month i told you that on August First, 2016, we had made The Big Change to a database-driven form of order tracking. At that time i proudly announced that we were "only four weeks behind on large and split-shipment orders." Well, as of today, September First, 2016, we are only THREE WEEKS behind. The system is working!
Last month i noted that we had "225 waiting orders backed up 'on the floor'" -- and today that number is 146. We are rolling!
Thanks again to all in the shop, and especially to Heidi, who is so on top of it i just want to hug her!
Speaking of wheels ... if you live in the Sonoma-Marin area of Northern California and like model trains, mark SEPTEMBER 18, 2016 on your calendar. We will be hosting an Open House for the Bay Area Garden Railroad Society and running trains all day in front of the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. As always, the shop will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but we expect that the BAGRS club members will be coming through between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. If you are planning to attend my September 19th - 23rd Free Apprenticeship for graduates of my course, consider stopping by a day early and watching the wheels go 'round.
And that reminds me -- there are still a few slots open for the Apprenticeship, so check it out below and if you want to join in, contact Heidi, as explained.

Letter from the Editor
Take It From Over The Heart:
Using Graveyard Dirt For Love
At first, it may seem bizarre and a bit morbid to use graveyard dirt for spells designed to create warm feelings of love and affection, but this necromantic curio has a been used by Southern root doctors for just this purpose for years.
Love spells utilizing graveyard dirt basically fall into two categories, those which rely on dirt taken from the grave of a loved one and those which rely on coercion to achieve their ends. In the former class of spells, dirt is taken from the grave of someone who loved you in life, whether a friend, family member, or even (if you live far from the final resting places of your ancestral line) a pet. Because these people loved you in life, they want you to be happy and to find someone who can love you in return. It's easy for them to be on your side. When buying dirt from their graves special attention is usually made to dig up the dirt from above the heart.
The other class of love spells which makes use of graveyard dirt is in fact a bit more macabre. Such spells use graveyard dirt in order to set the spirit of the dead to help coerce their intended to love them, by whatever means necessary. In these spells the dirt need not come from over the heart, or be from someone who loved the root worker, either. Typically the would-be lover is goofered until they weaken enough to become malleable, at which point the spell is finished and it is up to the worker to nurse their sweetheart/victim back to health. The Love Me Or Die Jackball Spell is such a case. Such a spell is clearly not for the tender-hearted, and should only be undertaken if the worker is well-versed in how to properly dispose of any remains.
CONJURED by Esmond Edwards as recorded by Wynnonie Harris Chicago, August 6, 1964 (Chess CHV412)
You said it was love made me stutter when I talk, But is it love that makes me stagger when I walk?
The Gypsy woman told me, "She's got you conjured, son" Well, somebody's lyin' -- you are that Gypsy one.
You said I was jealous when I didn't go to work, You sprinkled my shoes with graveyard dirt,
The Gypsy woman told me, "She's got you conjured, son" Well, somebody's lyin' -- you are that Gypsy one.
The whiskey you bought me, I was afraid to unscrew it, The Gypsy woman told me it was embalming fluid You got a Black Cat Bone and a Buzzard Feather, A John the Conquer Root and they're all tied together
The Gypsy woman told me, "She's got you conjured, son" Well, somebody's lyin' -- you are that Gypsy one.
(repeat last verse and chorus)
Love & bones,
Rowan

For the prices, they are a-changin'
by catherine yronwode
People often ask us at the shop, "Which Oil [or Bath Crystal, or Sachet Powder, or Incense Powder] is the BEST for my situation?"
Sometimes we can answer that, because there are unique formulas that brook no substitutes and which are the best of their type simply because they stand alone. Boss Fix is a recipe of this type. There is nothing else like it, and no one ever asks, "Which is better, Boss Fix or ..." because their is no alternative.
Other formulas seem similar to one another, at least by name.
Good Luck or Fast Luck -- what sets them apart from one another?
Protection or Fiery Wall of Protection -- which is better?
Spirit Guide or Indian Spirit Guide -- what's the difference?
House Blessing or Money House Blessing -- which one should we choose?
These and other questions are asked so often that we have a stock of ready replies:
Fast Luck is quicker than Good Luck but does not always last as long.
Fiery Wall of Protection burns intruders while Protection provides a covering shield.
Spirit Guide calls upon all spirits; Indian Spirit Guide calls upon Native American spirits.
House Blessing blesses the home; Money House Blessing blesses the home business.
Sometimes, rather than give out quick (and, truth to tell, not always 100% in-depth) mnemonics like these, we throw the question back into the hands of the customer: "Smell them! Whichever you prefer is probably the right one for you."
Of course, that only works for customers in the shop who can open the bottles and take a whiff.
So sometimes we say, "Well, it's not that easy to decide. They smell different, and there may be slight differences in the emphasis of the formulas which come out in terms of ingredients -- because every formula is different -- but, you know what? We can tell you which is the most popular fairly easily, because we keep records of what sells the best."
We are not suggesting that "best selling" means "best for your job," but popularity breeds further popularity, especially by word of mouth, and our most popular Dressing Oils are -- believe it or not -- as much as 75 times more popular than our least popular Dressing Oil titles. The same is true for Sachet Powders: The most popular Sachet Powder titles are 75 times more popular than the lowest-selling Sachet Powder titles.
Incense Powders follow a more tightly-clustered pattern: The best selling Incense Powder titles are only about 50 times as popular as the least-selling Incense Powder titles.
And Bath Crystals are off the charts: The best selling Bath Crystal titles are actually 100 times as popular as the least-selling Bath Crystal titles.
Lucky for us, and for our customers, we hand-make every batch of every product. If demand is low, we make fewer of that title. If demand is high, we make more. We never want our stocks to go stale on the shelf, and we never want to be out of a title and unable to supply it.
So, just around now, we bet you are wondering what the most popular titles are. Or, if you are like us, a little bit tetched in the head, you may be wondering which are the least popular titles, the metaphorical "rescue puppies" among the bottled Oils and foil-packed spiritual supplies.
Sure, we can tell you that. No problem. It's in the database -- as part of our 20-plus years of meticulous record-keeping. Our most popular Oils are:

Upcoming Apprenticeship Week:
September 19-23, 2016
|
The upcoming Apprenticeship Week previously planned for August is now scheduled for September 19-23. T he Lucky Mojo Apprenticeship curriculum consists of nine lecture classes of 3 - 4 hours each, and nine hands-on training sessions of 3 - 5 hours each. These sessions are organized into three one-week blocks, referred to as Week One, Week Two, and Week Three. Apprentices need not take the three weeks of sessions in order, although that is recommended. The upcoming Apprenticeship Week will cover the material for Week One.
Week One: Herbs, Candles, Special Waters Monday: Herb Lecture, Identifying and Harvesting Herbs Tuesday: Harvesting, Dehydrating, and Packing Herbs Wednesday: Candle Lecture; Dressing Candles Thursday: Labelling, Dressing, and Fixing Candles Friday: Special Waters Lecture, Making Specials As always, the Apprenticeship Week is free to graduates of Miss cat's Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course and those who would like to attend should have turned in all of their homework by September's Homework Party on the 9th. From 2003 through 2016, out of 2,000 enrolled Hoodoo Rootwork Correspondence Course students, about 500 have turned in their homework and graduated -- and are eligible for free Apprenticeship training. From 2005 through 2016, about 60 Graduates have gone on to complete the three-week hands-on Apprenticeship Training.
The Apprenticeship Curriculum is tight and intensive. It runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, during shop hours, with 1/2 hour allowed for lunch each day except Wednesday, which has a 45-minute lunch break called the Apprenticeship Lunch, an obligatory event at which Apprentices meet and mingle with Lucky Mojo staff. There is also an obligatory Apprenticeship Dinner during the week, catered by Heidi Simpson.
Due to the tight teaching and training schedule, we ask Apprentices to not shop the store while apprenticing or after hours. You are welcome to shop during your lunch break, or to submit a shopping list when you arrive and your goods will be ready to be rung up during one of your lunch breaks or, if the order is a large one, it will be ready for you to check out on the Saturday morning following your Apprenticeship week.
Please remember that no "drop in" Apprentices will be accepted for training. Attendees must sign-up in advance with the Lucky Mojo shop manager in order to attend. Contact Heidi Simpson at 707-887-1521 Sunday through Thursday 10am to 4pm or email her at heidi@luckymojo.com.
