This month we open a secret cabinet at the Lucky Mojo Curio Company -- the hidden extra-dimensional area where we keep our fabulous array of divinatory tea cups.

Read Your Leaves, Dearie?

The most unique line of goods for sale at Lucky Mojo is our curated collection of antique and vintage tea leaf reading cups. First manufactured in 1899, these special divination cups reached the height of their popularity just before the Second World War, and are still made to this day.

Divination cups come in three basic styles -- those that contain astrological symbols, those that contain tea leaf reading symbols, and those that contain playing card symbols.

The cups shown here are offered for sale on a FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED basis. We get them in periodically and erratically: at any given time our stock of a particular variety may range from zero to as many as a dozen. ALWAYS CALL BFORE ORDERING these cups. If we are sold out of a particular variety, please send an email to the order department and ask for it to be added to your customer record so that we can contact you (with no obligation on your part, of course) when or if we do locate the type of cup you want.

Prices here are for the cups on hand and are based on what we paid. Prices are subject to change WITHOUT NOTICE as we acquire new or different cups.

Nelros Cup of Fortune, Aynsley, Low Doris, England

The Nelros Cup of Fortune was manufactured from 1904 - 1924
of bone china; the interior is decorated with astrological
and tea leaf symbols.

Fortune Teller Cup, Paragon, Green Plain, England, 1935;

Magenta Symbols

The Plain Green Omen Cup was manufactured circa 1935 - 1945
of bone china; the interior is decorated with tea leaf symbols.

Cup of Fortune, Romany, Wilkinson, England, 1935;

52 Red and Black Symbols

The Romany Cup of Fortune, was manufactured circa 1935 - 1940
of white pottery, and contains the red and black tea leaf symbols.

Fortune Cup, Genevieve Wimsatt, Chinese Symbols, USA

The Fortune Cup was manufactured circa 1926
of Ohio earthenware, with Chinese fortune telling symbology.

Cup of Knowledge J & G Meakin,

Ye Olde English, Lyre and Urn, England, 1924

The small size of the cup identifies it as manufactured in
1924 - 1925 for the British Empire Exhibition; the symbols
are playing cards.

Nelros Good Luck, Aynsley, Coffee Can, England

This straight-sided demitasse cup was manufactured circa
1904 -1914 of bone china; it is for reading coffee grounds
rather than tea leaves and has no interior symbols;
the words "Good Luck" are outside.

Treasure Trove Number Two

Unique Tools of the Diviner's Art

One reason there are so many different styles of tea leaf reading cups is that their exterior decorations were made to match what were at the time popular dinnerware sets. Porcelain and earthenware dinner sets were often sold in place settings of six; adding a couple of extra tea leaf cups to match one's set enabled the lady of the house to read the cups of her friends. Because tea leaf reading is not a daily practice, these cups received less use and are often found in excellent condition despite their age.

The two image collections shown in this newsletter BARELY SCRATCH THE SURFACE of the many antique divination tea cups we offer in the shop. The Taltos Cup, the three varieties of Red Rose Cups, the Zarka Cup, the Jane Lyle Cup, the Aynsley Black Feather, the Paragon Yellow Embossed, the Ucagco Three-Legged Cup -- the list is long and splendid. If you want to know more, please see the Lucky Mojo catalogue page on Divination Tools, in the Tea Cup section:

For more information on how to read these specially marked cups, please consult "The Black Folder" book for the article "Tea Leaf Reading: A Brief Introduction" by catherine yronwode.

Cup of Knowledge, Aynsley, Buttercups, Low Doris

Aynsley has manufactured almost 100 different varieties of the popular Cup of Knowledge from 1924 to the present time; all are bone china with playing card symbols on the interior and only the exteriors vary; this one probably dates from the 1950s.

Cup of Knowledge, Aynsley, Hydrangea, Low Doris

Aynsley has manufactured almost 100 different varieties of the popular Cup of Knowledge from 1924 to the present time; all are bone china with playing card symbols on the interior and only the exteriors vary; this one probably dates from the 1950s.

Cup of Knowledge, Aynsley, Yellow Flower Band Low Doris

Aynsley has manufactured almost 100 different varieties of the popular Cup of Knowledge from 1924 to the present time; all are bone china with playing card symbols on the interior and only the exteriors vary; this one probably dates from the 1930s.

Cup of Knowledge, Aynsley, Bird and Urn, Wembley

The small size of the cup identifies it as manufactured in
1924 - 1925 for the British Empire Exhibition at Wemby;
the symbols are playing cards; not all "Wembly" cups have
decals in the saucer; this one does.

Gypsy Teresa, J & G Meakin, Pointy Handle, England

This cup was manufactured from around 1926 - 1940 of white earthenware; the saucer is decorated with a "cheat-sheet" that assists the reader to interpret the playing card symbols in the cup.

Fortune Teller Cup, A. E. Knobler, Zodiac, USA, Circa 1985-1995

This small straight-sided cup is one of several copy-cat styles
based on the modernistic Taltos Cup of Fortune designed by Jon Anton in 1975; Anton in turn had copied all of the astrological and tea leaf symbols in his cup from the 1904 Aynsley Nelros Cup of Fortune; the Knobler cup was manufactured in Japan of the characteristically grey-white porcelain of that nation and was
sold in the United States.
