Her Three Favorite Amulets
For Protection and Power
|
I have been spending a lot of time lately working with, charging and cleansing amulets. Today I am going to tell you about my favorite ones, and how I prepare them, or cleanse them when they require attention. I wear amulets for protection against psychic or evil eye attacks. I also wear bracelets as a form of grounding or storing excess energy.
Hamsa Hand My favorite amulet for protection against the evil eye is known as the Hamsa Hand in Jewish tradition, or the Hand of Fatima in Islamic tradition. Lucky Mojo sells a variety of Hamsa hands, including amulets, key chains, and wall hangers in a variety of materials and finishes.
To charge the Hamsa Hand, I set the amulet on my altar, normally on Friday night, and light a white Sabbath candle. Any simple white candle will do, and you can anoint it with Cast Off Evil Oil.
Light the candle and hold the Hamsa Hand in your hands. There should be some oil on your hands left over from anointing the candle; let the oil transfer from your hands to the amulet as you pray for blessings and protection.
Many Hamsa Hands have a prayer written on the back in Hebrew or Arabic. If you do not know what the prayer is, you may use this one, or pray in your own words: "Let this house be a beautiful, peaceful abode. Let tranquility, unity, blessings and success abundantly fill each room, with help from the Heavens above. Let there be raised a righteous generation under the shade of this roof, who will fill this house with the sound of Torah. And let the Divine Presence exist in every corner."
After you are done, lay the amulet on the altar until the candle has burned out. It's ready to use after that. To recharge the amulet, simply repeat the above ritual.
 
Tibetan Medicine Bracelets The second type of amulet I use is actually a pair of Tibetan Medicine Bracelets, also known as Shamanic Healing Bracelets, that I purchased from Lucky Mojo. I chose the bracelets because they help with my arthritis, but they have grown to be my number one protection from any negative work I do with my hands, and additionally they store extra power that I gather. Instead of grounding the excess power into the ground, the bracelets store the energy for future use. This provides me an extra punch when fixing and dressing mojo hands and amulets for my clients.
When I first wore my bracelets I had the opening on the inside of my wrist, to help recharge me when I was worn down. Once I started working and was healthy again, I reversed them, so the opening is now on the top of my wrist, where they collect energy. If I need a quick boost of energy, I turn them around.
The ritual of fixing the bracelets and the work of periodically cleansing them is the same. Wearing the bracelets, I wash my hands in salt water, preferably kosher salt water.
You will need about a quart of kosher salt water. First pour water over your right hand twice, and then over your left hand twice. Raise both of your hands, like a surgeon does, and let the water run down your wrists, over the bracelets, saying, "Blessed art Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with Thy commandments and has commanded us concerning the washing of the hands."
Then, instead of drying your hands with a towel, reverse your hands downward and let the water drip back down over the bracelets. Finish by allowing your hands to air dry. This cleanses and blesses the bracelets.
Remember to think about your bracelets when doing magical work, and to direct energy or power into or out of them as needed.

Silver Dime Finally, I wear a traditional silver dime around my ankle. I believe that an amulet of this sort should be part of everyday wear for anyone doing any kind of rootwork. I believe that the need to keep our feet protected is crucial. A simple red cord through a drilled silver dime works just fine to hold the dime.
Because the silver dime protects against foot track tricks, my method of fixing and preparing it is to anoint the dime with Fear Not to Walk Over Evil and to set it to charge in the moonlight. Full moon is best for silver, but any clear moon will do.
If I want some extra protection, for instance against an ongoing attack, I will drop the dime into a glass of water and set it on a window sill in the moonlight overnight. In the morning i will remove the dime from the water, drink the water, string the dime on its cord, and anoint it with Fear Not to Walk Over Evil Oil before tying it on my ankle.
A fun but non-traditional way to revive the silver dime amulet is with a pedicure! Enjoy a pedicure at home or the salon, and put just a drop of Fear Not To Walk Over Evil oil in the foot bath. The cosmetologists at my salon don't even blink an eye when I do this.

Changes in the air
This month we are saying goodbye to three long-time Lucky Mojo employees. These changes have been underway for a while, and although not a surprise, they do mark a significant shift in the shop.
Robin Petersen, our loyal and innovative Shop Manager, the woman who brought us from the dark ages of hand-written everything to bright-and-shiny-database everything, pioneered our Conjure Cookoffs, managed our Hoodoo Heritage Festival Workshop programs, was the fun-loving Birthday Party organizer, and will always be Sophie's Best Auntie, is taking a medical leave. We wish you all the best, Robin, and our prayers and hopes are with you always.
Apollo Dark, our versatile order enterer, puller, shipper, and tarot card reader, has been busily developing his own career in the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers and Hoodoo Psychics, and has come to the point that holding down a 9-to-5 job at the shop would limit his ability to work with his private clients, so, like the strong fledgling he is, he has launched himself into the world. Take flight, Apollo -- and soar!
Lisa Warrick has worked as an order puller and candle setter in the shop for the past two years and was a presenter at our 2013 "Queer Conjure" panel. A native of New Orleans, she brought a deep-rooted family practice of conjure to Lucky Mojo. She will continue working for her personal clients, and helping people help themselves in private practice. Lisa hopes to move back home to the Crescent City in 2014. Lisa, i want to see you dancing the second line with a crown upon your head! All love and respect to you, for all time.
Taking on Robin's former role as Shop Manager will be stalwart Heidi Simpson, our current Laboratory Manager, and moving into Heidi's old spot as Lab Manager will be long-time Lab Worker Alicia Cashaw. In you we trust, gals!
We have hired two delightful ladies to start on the Pulling and Packing Floor: Melissa Damasauskas and Angela Sharp-Sabatino. They join our most recent hire, Donna Starr, who has been also working as a puller and packer for the past couple of months, during this ongoing transition. Ultimately, after taking my course in hoodoo and working under me for the three-week hands-on apprenticeship, Donna, Melissa, and Angela will be cross-trained to work in the lab as well. Welcome to the "Big Lucky Mojo Machine" (LOL!), Melissa and Angela.
