Well, Fall is here and it's time to take stock of what we have accomplished this summer and to prepare for the colder and wetter months ahead. Our new employee, Bo Maldonado, is getting into the swing of things, and we welcome him to our team. Plans are afoot for the construction of a small model railway on the Lucky Mojo property in time for our Hoodoo Heritage Workshops next spring (nothing extravagant, just some G-scale narrow gauge steam locos hauling freight and passengers around a redwood tree), and, basically, everything is rockin' and rollin' as usual. For a change of pace, our feature article this time is by the MISC candle setter and Hoodoo Psychics reader, Miss Phoenix. She recently took a stroll through the Lucky Mojo book department and came up with some suggestions for folks who want to learn more about magic, divination, and spirituality.

Miss Phoenix Peruses the Library:

Six Books You Ought To Read

At Lucky Mojo we have a large and amazing book store department. You could spend weeks reading through our vast array and still only make a small dent in the amount there is to read. Although each book we carry has been hand-selected to offer the best on several magical and occult topics, here are six reviews that touch on different areas of our book catalog. Consider them as holiday gifts -- or put them on your own wish list with family and friends!

The Black Folder

Have you ever wished to have all of the handouts and flyers from past Hoodoo Heritage Festivals? Have you ever wished to have detailed spells written with clear instructions from the many talented members of AIRR? Well, look no further because "The Black Folder" is here! This 136 page trade paperback contains spells, information sheets, and instructions on everything from Candle Ministries, to Moon Phases, to Latin American Saint Packets, to Tea Leaf Reading, to Grocery Store Magic, High-Tech Hoodoo, Black Walnut Spells, and on and on and on. These have all been gathered together in one convenient, and good looking, book designed to look like an old fashioned black report cover. Any serious student of American folk magic needs this book as part of their collection!

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs

Of course, we all know that "Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic" by catherine yronwode is the leading authority on all things connected to hoodoo, herbs, and curios. But there is another reference source that can open your mind to all things herbs from a European magical perspective. That book is the "Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs" by Scott Cunningham, a classic in the world of magic and herbology. Any hoodoo practitioner can use the two herb books in conjunction to make them a powerhouse in the field of herbal magic. This 326 page trade paperback has been used by rootworkers and magicians alike for decades.

Not in Kansas Anymore

This story is an interesting firsthand account of how magic is changing the face of American culture, told through the lens of a non-magical and skeptical journalist. Christine Wicker is a former student of catherine yronwode, and she takes the reader through a series of magical events that she participated in over a years' time. "Not in Kansas Anymore" explores many different forms of fringe culture and magic in America, including details that focus on African American folk magic. Rootwork and hoodoo are looked at in depth, showing how they developed in the Americas and remain an important part of American culture today, and Wicker includes lengthy interviews with catherine and nagasiva yronwode, the co-owners of the Lucky Mojo Curio Company.

Hollywood Be Thy Name

Our shop welcomes practitioners from all faiths and all systems of magic, but the focus is, and always has been, on African American culture. We carry a selection of movies and music on DVD and CD that help newcomers to hoodoo learn more about African American culture, folklore, and magical practices through the technique of cultural immersion. If you are interested in the connection between hoodoo and Christianity, "Hollywood Be Thy Name," a scholarly but highly readable book by Judith Weisenfeld, will open your eyes. Subtitled, "African American Religion in American Film, 1929 - 1949," it is the perfect accompaniment to films such as "The Blood of Jesus" and "Go Down Death," which we carry in our DVD department.
