A World of Magic!

The Lucky W Amulet Archive has received a significant upgrade! One of the oldest portions of the Lucky Mojo family of websites, the Lucky W Amulet Archive was first placed on the web in 1994 and contains pages that describe and illustrate a variety of charms and talismans from around the world and from all cultures and eras.

Some of the items are "museum pieces," either one-of-a-kind or rare antiquities, but more than half of the amulets illustrated are currently in commerce and for sale through the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. With the addition of new images to the Lucky Mojo catalogue sections covering Catholic saints and Hindu deities, the corresponding Lucky W Amulet Archive pages about these spiritual entities have been updated, resulting in the addition of almost 100 new pages linked from the Lucky W Amulet Archive index page.

Newly listed on this index page you will now find articles on amulet boxes, Arabic protection amulets, the evil eye, incense, saints, Hindu deities, key chains, Isis, Loteria, the lucky pig, milagros, spirit boards, naga dolls, guardian masks, bind rune amulets, magical perfumes, prayer wheels, Solomonic talismans, skulls, wall altars, and medicine bracelets. This month we are going to give you a sneak peek into some of these fascinating topics from all over the world.

Norse Bind Runes

The history of bind runes dates back to the Proto-Norse Age (3rd to 7th century). Norse bind rune glyphs were created by combining two or more alphabetic runes, traditionally from the Elder Futhark alphabet. Bind runes were used for a variety of reasons, including magical means. Lucky Mojo has a selection of fantastic bind runes carved on bone, and easily hung on a cord. Our collect of bind runes include those for attracting money and prosperity, love charms, success in court, symbols of strength in the name of the Norse gods, empowerment, and warding off of negative forces.

Kalbeliya Gypsy Charms

Gypsy Mirror Charms in their bright colors are hand made by gypsy women who crochet the mirrors along with braided tassels, buttons, seed beads and brass bells. Each charm is unique and makes a wonderful key chain that you can always keep with you.

Ojo de Venado (Deer's Eye Charms)

Ojo de Venado are such an incredibly nifty apotropaic charm made from Mucuna pruriens, a dark brown seed also called a Velvet Bean. The beans are strung on red string with a red woolen tassel and a catholic saint print varnished on the outside.

Amulet Boxes

Like many people, we love pretty boxes, boxes to keep our charms in, to hold cards, incense or anything else special and important. The hand-painted wooden Loteria boxes are really lovely and just a great size. The boxes are 2.5 inches by 3.75 inches and 1.5 inches deep. Images from Loteria cards, such as the Heart, Mermaid, Rose, Moon, Hand and Devil are painted on lids of the boxes. Consider one of these hand-painted boxes when making your next purchase. They are lovely on an altar as well.

Lucky Pigs!

If you've not had a chance to see this wonderful image you are missing an extra smile for the day. The pig in clover represents prosperity and well-being. Pigs thrive well on farms, are fertile, produce a lot of meat, and sell well. It's not surprising that the piggy bank is such a common image for saving coins for a rainy day. The image below is of an old post card, more information on lucky pigs and postcards can be found on the links below.

Guatemalan Worry Dolls

One of the best purchases you can make for a child who is worried or frightened of something, these wonderful little bags hold six little dolls. The child takes a doll out of the bag and whispers the worry to the doll and places it under their pillow. When the child wakes up, the doll is gone and so is the worry.

Evil Eye Protection

The Hamesh or Hamsa Hand is an apotropaic charm from the Middle East. It appears in a two-thumbed, bilaterally symmetrical form and in a more natural form in which there is only one thumb. There is good archaeological evidence to suggest that this downward-pointing protective hand predates both Judaism (Hand of Miriam) and Islam (Hand of Fatima) and that it refers to an ancient Middle Eastern goddess whose hand (or vulva, in other images) wards off the evil eye.

Amulets and charms with eyes are believed to protect against the Eye of Envy. Protective Eyes may also be found on other items such as amuletic horseshoes.

Protection from the evil eye is not a new topic to our Lucky Mojo customers, and we each have our favourites. Here are a few of ours:
