Hello  :

The tennis season is moving along swiftly. In the first event, the BNP Paribas in Indian Wells, Maria Sharapova won the title; however, Serena Williams elected to skip that event. On the men's side Rafa Nadal won in Indian Wells in his return to the hard courts since his last hard court match almost a year ago. He seems to be following Roger Federer's lead in making strategic scheduling decisions to protect his knees and ensure better success this year, and hopefully, throughout his career. Hence, he, along with Federer, chose to skip the Sony Open to rest and prepare for the clay court season.

In the second premier series event, the Sony Open in Miami, Serena Williams showed her dominance in the women's game with a convincing third set victory over Maria Sharapova. Crowd favorite, Tommy Haas, was able to put together a successful game plan to get a huge upset victory over Novak Djokovic in their quarterfinal match; however, David Ferrer was a bit too much to handle. The finals matched the always tough Ferrer against Andy Murray. Tensions were high but Murray managed to survive tough conditions and the extremely competitive Ferrer to pull out a tough third set victory that lasted nearly three hours.

We now enter the part of the season where Nadal has shown his complete dominance on clay. In less than two weeks he will be playing at Monte Carlo, looking for his 8th title in the last 8 years, an amazing feat considering the level of competition in the men's game over the last 5 years.

It should be a great clay court season to watch this year with the top four men's players in contention. Exciting tennis to follow indeed!

See you on the courts!  mattreturnzacreturncraigreturnguestguest1

3 Quick Reminders for Your Practices

  1. Have a definitive plan of what you want to work on. It could be as simple as: hit shots deep down the middle until a short ball arrives, then attack cross-court. Whatever it is, stick to your plan.
  2. Get warmed up well so you are able to execute what you have in mind; otherwise your practice will not be worthwhile. Try your best to simulate a match environment where you usually have a 10 minute warm-up, then you must quickly get your mind on your game plan.
  3. Maintain a positive outlook while you practice because you will be working on things that are not comfortable or may be new. Be patient and keep trying. Your efforts in your practices will allow you to show results in your matches.

If you follow these three simple things before your practices, you will improve faster than just showing up to play. And always remember that tennis is a awesome game!

Thanks again for all your continued support.

The Advantages of Serving and Volleying

Hitting a serve and following it into the net is a great strategy. It forces the player across the net to hit a better shot than normal which can cause them to miss. On top of that it gives the server an advantage to put more pressure on the receiver even after the first volley.

Typically there is time for two steps before a split step when coming into the net after a serve. It is best to serve into the player's body or onto their weaker side so that there is more time and less pressure while going forward. The serve and volley does not have to be used for every serve and a spin serve that gives a player more time to follow it into the net may be the best.

In doubles it is especially important to have a serve and volley. In doubles, cnce two players are at the net there is more of a chance at winning the point.

Look forward to seeing you on the courts!

Tune-Out or Tune-Up

Many people take better care of their cars, their pets, and their gardens than they take care of themselves.  They grasp the concept that prevention and maintenance helps minimize the risk of breakdowns and decay for other things but not ourselves.  We tend to take our health and bodies for granted when feeling good.  However....when it comes to the muscles, joints, and neurological systems, they require maintenance and tune-ups as well.

Most people either Tune-Out or Tune-Up

TUNE OUT signs of breakdowns.  Masking the pain with painkillers, avoiding exercise, and putting topical pain killers all blunt out the symptoms but don't correct the cause.  I feel the distraction of life is the biggest tune-out, often showing up as the "too busy" or "don't have time" method. If you hear a clunking in your car, don't just turn up the radio louder, you find the time so you are not stranded on the side of the road.

TUNE-UP to minimize risk of breakdowns.  It is good to come in for a check-up every 4-8 weeks to make sure muscles are conditioned, joints are moving well, and neurologically you are "firing on all cylinders".
Studies show the combination of exercise and manipulation (the stuff I do) helps prevent relapse and pain.  So hopefully you are maintaining your exercises and myofascial release on your end, I will be here to keep you TUNED-UP on my end.  Call the office, or schedule online any time of the day!
