It's hard to imagine that a little over 40 years ago, it was perfectly legal for a factory to spew toxic black clouds into the air or dump toxic waste into a nearby stream. Only a small portion of the American population was familiar with - let alone practiced - recycling. And big, gas-guzzling cars were considered a sign of prosperity.
The first American Earth Day held on April 22, 1970 was aimed at creating a mass environmental movement and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson. It was a huge success and helped bring about the establishment of a new federal agency focusing on environmental issues later that year - the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Today, Earth Day (often "Earth Week") is now celebrated and recognized in almost 200 countries. Enjoy hot dogs, chips & drinks!- proceeds benefit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
