Why is Crabgrass Called Crabgrass?

Crabgrass...  why is it called crabgrass? While no one seems to know exactly, the leaves growing out from a central "body" does somewhat resemble a crab. Some say it's called crabgrass because it makes people feel crabby when they see it in their lawn.

Crabgrass belongs to Digitaria, a genus of about 300 species of grass native to tropical and warm temperate regions. All Digitaria seeds have a long germination period and if conditions are right, they can germinate throughout the growing season. Interestingly, some types of this grass are not considered weeds. The seed of an African species are ground into flour used to make porridge or fermented to make beer!

Regardless of how crabgrass got its name, it can ruin your lawn. Crabgrass is an annual plant capable of producing 150,000 seeds per season. Like any other weed, crabgrass depletes the soil of nutrients and water your lawn needs. And because it's hardier than most lawn grasses, it can quickly take over your yard.

Not yet visible, crabgrass along with chickweed and other weeds are lurking in your lawn. These weeds begin to show up around the last week of February and start flowering the first week of March and can quickly take over your lawn. Pre-emergent herbicides such as Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer form a barrier that prevents seed germination (growth of an embryonic plant within the seed), stopping crabgrass and other weeds before they sprout.

Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer is a granular product easily applied to your lawn with a drop or broadcast spreader and very effective in stopping crabgrass before it starts. Scotts Turf Builder with Halts prevents crabgrass and fertilizes your lawn.

Note:
You cannot lay new grass seed after applying a pre-emergent herbicide.
Not only do they prevent weed seeds from germinating, most pre-emergent herbicides also prevent grass seeds from germinating as well. You call still put down grass seed to fill in "bare" areas as long as you don't apply a herbicide and/or fertilizer at the same time.
