Neighborhood Education Workshop Wins Five Trophies at Robotics Competition

A team of seven talented students from Neighborhood Education Workshop (NEW), a Program Partner of UAC, competed in the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE) Pennsylvania Regional Challenge at Villanova University. UAC's President Sharmain Matlock-Turner and Director of Youth Division, Farrah Samuels-Alexander, had an opportunity to meet the NEW team and learn more about this wonderful after-school program!

The team built an underwater robot and was awarded five trophies including 1st place for Communication and Presentation and 3rd place for Spirit and Sportsmanship.

The NEW team constructed an underwater roving machine and presented their results to working professionals in the oceanic industry.

NEW's mission is to provide students with interesting educational opportunities after school. Congratulations to the NEW team on their great accomplishment!

Tips for Youth on Money Management

With summer youth employment gearing up, the Urban Affairs Coalition's Community Economic Development (CED) department has a series of workshops designed to help young adults learn the basics of financial management. We want to encourage young adults to avoid check cashing agencies and payday lending loans. These services guarantee fast cash but result in high costs.

CED's Financial Program Manager, Shayna Lear suggest young adults open a free account at a credit union to begin their path to financial success. Lear advises young adults to follow these four financial steps as they think about money: spend some, save some, share some, and invest some.
