Dryer Fire Safety

Fire from one of the most common household appliances - the dryer - causes significant damage and injuries each year.  Most of these fires are caused by lint caught in the dryer vent becoming overheated.

Here are some simple tips to help you avoid this common danger:
  • Do not use a dryer without a lint filter.
  • Clean the lint filter after each load of laundry.
  • Use rigid or flexible metal venting material to sustain proper air flow and drying time.
  • Clean lint out of the vent pipe annually or if it is taking longer for clothes to dry.
  • Do not overload your dryer.
  • Turn the dryer off if you leave home, and when you go to bed.
October is
Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month!

Visit your local shelter and adopt a homeless hound into your family.  If you are unable to adopt, there are other ways you can help.  Consider volunteering, donating or sponsoring an animal at the shelter.

These furry companions will be forever thankful for your help!

Deer Season is Here Again

The beauty of the autumn and harvest season is all around us.  Along with the splendor of the season comes the annual rash of deer/vehicle collisions.  According to the National Highway Safety Administration, there are approximately 1.5 million deer/vehicle accidents each year, and the majority of them occur in the Midwest.  In fact, Ohio is one of the top ten states where people are fatally injured in deer collisions every year.

To decrease your chance of suffering serious injury should your vehicle collide with a deer, slow down as much as possible and don't swerve.  The NHSA cautions that swerving often leads to collisions with oncoming traffic, trees or other objects, and rolling over.  These types of collisions frequently result in more serious accidents causing injuries and even death.  Additionally, be aware that deer often travel in packs.  When you see one, there are likely more nearby.  Hopefully these reminders will help you avoid injury if you do happen to collide with a deer while driving.

Your Frequently Asked

Insurance Questions

Q. I am considering signing up as a driver for a ride-sharing company such as Uber in order to make a little extra income.  Are there any insurance concerns I should be aware of  if I use my car in this way?

A.  Use of Ride Sharing Services- also known as Transportation Network Companies- such as Uber and Lyft, may be convenient to use and may seem like a good way to earn a few extra dollars.   However, drivers for these services as well as passengers should be aware of insurance gaps when using their personal autos to provide this service.  If you are new to the ride sharing craze, these services are an application which can be installed on a smartphone.  The application uses GPS technology to connect people requesting a ride with available drivers.  Individuals can apply to become drivers for these companies.

Potential insurance problems arise due to the fact that these drivers use their personal autos to provide the service, and rely on their personal auto policy for insurance protection.    Personal auto policies generally contain language excluding liability coverage for ownership or operation of a vehicle while it is being used as a public or livery conveyance; or while it is being used to carry persons or property for a fee.  They were not designed for vehicles being used for commercial purposes.

Ride sharing companies provide liability coverage to their drivers, but only between the times they agree to pick up customers and when they drop them off.  After they drop off the customers and pull away, the ride sharing companies provide secondary coverage, though the driver is still on the app awaiting a ride request.   Confusion arises if a driver is in an accident during these times, and it can take time to sort out which insurance company is responsible.

Look for more regulation from lawmakers in an effort to clarify and ensure safety with this new innovative service.   The insurance industry is addressing the matter as well by adding new policy language and exclusion forms.  This is sure to be a rapidly evolving area.  See the Ohio Department of Insurance link below for additional information.  Click here.
