Ask Anne
Your Frequently Asked
Insurance Questions
Q. During the storm last night my tree fell on my neighbor's garage.
Does my homeowner's policy cover the damage to their garage?
A. If your tree was not diseased and you had not neglected to care for it (i.e. trimming dead branches, etc.), then you are not responsible for the damage to the neighbor's garage caused by the fallen tree. The neighbor's homeowner's policy should respond regardless of who owned the tree. If however, you had neglected to take down your tree which was clearly diseased and a danger to people or property, then you could be held liable for damage caused by it. Your personal liability coverage under your homeowner's policy could come into play in such a case.

Many people have seen their home values slip, to the point where they have no equity.
Our sister company, Brooker Financial Corp., participates in the federal HARP program (Home Affordable Refinance Program). The HARP program allows you to take advantage of today's historically low rates, even if you owe more to your Lender than the home is worth.
Don't miss out on this special opportunity to save on your monthly mortgage payments when you refinance at these exceptionally low rates.

On the Greens Temperatures are rising, flowers are in bloom, and the grass is turning a lovely shade of green, announcing the arrival of spring. The beauty of the season beckons us to come outdoors and enjoy it. One of the outside recreational activities that you may enjoy participating in is a day on the greens. When you head to the golf course, have you ever thought about how / if your insurance coverage extends to a rented (non-owned) golf cart? What if you accidentally collide with a fellow-golfer's cart while heading down the fairway? What if you accidentally hit a tree or other stationary object and return the cart with a large dent? The good news is liability coverage is provided under the homeowner's policy as long as the golf cart is not required by law to be registered. Most homeowner policies' liability sections include $1000 coverage for Damage to Property of Others. So, relax and enjoy your round, knowing that your homeowner's policy will protect you should an accident occur. |
American Fire Marks
A Bit of History
The fire mark on my desk is a frequent source of interest and curiosity. So, here is some history on these uniquely designed collectibles from the past.
Used during the 18th to early 20th century, American fire marks were lead, tin, brass, cast-iron, zinc or copper signs embossed with the logo of the owner's insurance carrier. They were attached to the exterior of buildings for the purpose of informing fire brigades who the insurer was, since the actual insurance policy was usually lost in the fire. They served as a form of advertisement, alerting the fire brigade that the property was insured; and also discouraging arson. Their peak use was from 1850-1870. Fire marks are interesting artifacts from a by-gone era.

Health Care Reform Update With the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act, significant changes to the health care and health insurance industries will be implemented over the next several years.
Each quarter in the Homer Yost
Herald, we address an issue relating to health care reform to help you understand the various changes brought on by the new legislation.
Beginning in 2013, the cost of employer-sponsored group health insurance must be reported on W-2 forms. The value of the health insurance coverage is to be reported in Box 12 of the W-2 with a code DD. This requirement was optional for 2012. You may have noticed this new information included on your 2012 W-2 if your employer chose to comply early with this requirement.
The reporting of the cost does not mean the value of the health insurance is taxable. It is for informational purposes only and is intended to provide employees useful information on the cost of their health insurance coverage. |
