Your Frequently Asked

Insurance Questions

Homer Yost Agency Building

Q.  Do I need life insurance?

A.   One of the primary reasons to purchase life insurance is to protect the financial security of the loved ones who rely on you.  Do you:

-have a spouse, children, or other dependents you support?

-have a mortgage, or other debt?

-own a business?

-have a family history of illness?

- have trouble investing money?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need life insurance.  In the event of your untimely death, life insurance would alleviate your survivors' financial concerns including paying off debt, children's educational expenses; child and dependents living expenses, and more.  Employer provided life insurance may not be enough.  It may provide limited coverage and will probably only be available as long as you continue to work for that employer.  Lastly, various life events affect the amount of coverage you need.  Review your needs periodically and update coverage accordingly.

House with Ice Dam Icicles

Prevent Snow and Ice Claims

Did you know snow or ice is the fifth leading cause of homeowners insurance claims?  It is no secret that homeowners insurance rates are on the rise.  Being pro-active to prevent claims from occurring is a positive step we can all take towards minimizing rate increases.

Here are some tips for protecting your home from these winter weather woes:

-Tree and branches weakened by snow, ice and wind can snap and fall on your home or car.  Trim trees and remove dead branches.

-Prevent ice dams by removing leaves and debris from gutters, or install gutter guards.

-Prevent frozen pipes by keeping your home at least 65 degrees; look for pipes with cracks or leaks - they freeze first; keep cabinet doors open during extreme cold to allow warm air to circulate around pipes; wrap standard insulation or heating tape around the pipes where possible.

- If you will be absent from your home for several days, turn water off and drain pipes.  If you will be away for an extended period, have someone check your home daily.

-Sprinkle salt, sand or kitty litter over frozen walkways, sidewalks and driveways to prevent falls.

Enjoy the pleasures of the winter season while keeping winter weather woes at bay.

Health Care Reform Update Medical Symbol

With the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act, significant changes to the health care and health insurance industries will be implemented over the next several years.

Each quarter in the Homer Yost Herald, we address an issue relating to health care reform to help you understand the various changes brought on by the new legislation.

2013 will soon be upon us and additional elements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will continue to be implemented.  As we mentioned in our previous newsletter, a number of tax rule changes will take effect.  One such change affects the amount of out-of-pocket medical expenses that you may claim as itemized deductions.   Beginning January 1, 2013 the amount of medical expenses must exceed 10% of adjusted gross income in order to claim a deduction.  Previously the medical deduction floor was 7.5% of adjusted gross income.  However, for those age 65 and over the 7.5% floor continues until 2017.  See www.irs.gov

for additional information.
