Welcome to your local United Way's October e-newsletter. Our campaign is now in full swing, and we are excited to share with you some of the great things our supporters have been doing to help out the campaign--everything from volunteering at the Food Resource Center to picking apples! Thanks so much to everyone for your support.

story4Volunteer Spotlight - First National Bank of River Falls

First National Bank of River Falls is a supporter of United Way's Food Resource Center, often sponsoring monthly food shipments and volunteering. FNBRF sponsored the September 2013 food shipment and spent time volunteering at the FRC. Pictured from left to right presenting the check to United Way's John Coughlin are volunteers Debbie Volkert, Ken Osowski, Sandy Wurm and Kaydi Peterson.

FNBRF has also had several of its employees serve on the United Way Board of Directors. Senior VP-CFO Ken Osowski is a past board member and VP of Commercial Loans Richard Smith is currently serving. Also, bank President and CEO Jeff Johnson is serving as the fall 2013 Pierce County Campaign Chair.

Said Johnson, "FNBRF is always happy to have our employees be involved in such worthy efforts such as the Food Resource Center. We are proud to support United Way both with an annual financial contribution and by encouraging our employees to volunteer and help those in need from our surrounding communities."

Student United Way picking apples
Members of our Student United Way picked more than 20 boxes of apples for the Food Resource Center recently. We are grateful to them for their efforts, and for Mark and Sue Christopher of Maple Leaf Orchard in Spring Valley for donating the apples. For more information on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Student United Way, contact Abby Mediger.

Jennifer Ewig, Andersen Corporation Operations Planning Manager, is our Board Member Spotlight for October. Jennifer is a resident of Hudson and is currently the Board Secretary. She can be seen often at volunteer events, always with a smile on her face and often bringing her family along to help out. We are grateful for Jennifer's support of our United Way!

What made you want to join the United Way Board of Directors?

I joined the United Way board for a number of reasons. United Way has a great reputation in the community, I was familiar with the United Way mission and objectives through my workplace campaigns, and I thought it was an organization in which I could help to make a difference.

How long have you been a board member?
Two years.

You volunteer at many United Way St. Croix Valley events. What did you enjoy most about those events, and how do you think they benefited the community?

The events are a great way to spread the word about United Way. We have such a caring, "we are all in this together" attitude here in Western Wisconsin and it is motivating to see a high level of participation.Seeing community members come together validates that we are doing important work.

The events benefit the community by raising awareness about the needs in our neighborhoods and the many ways that United Way helps. The more people that know about our mission and successes the more will participate.

 story3Did You Know?
- Our Success By 6 target goal this past year was for a parent educator to visit 75% of new mothers at the five participating hospitals, and we reached 78%. Westfields Hospital now brings the number to six.

- Another target goal was to get 25% of new mothers to attend Family Resource Center St. Croix Valley's Baby & Me classes, and 33% ended up attending. More than 10% of the families were considered at-risk.
