Welcome to your local United Way's September e-newsletter. We have been busy this month getting things ready for our fall campaign, which kicked off with our joint event with United Way of Washington County-East, Hands Across the River, on September 14 (pictured above). We are extremely grateful for everyone who came out to show their support of their local United Ways.

United Way St. Croix Valley in Hudson and United Way of Washington County-East in Stillwater teamed up for the fall fundraising campaign kickoff event. The event, called "Hands Across the River," was a massive photo opportunity featuring over 150 volunteers in United Way T-shirts joining hands on the sidewalk across the Stillwater Lift Bridge.

United Way St. Croix Valley formally launched its 2013 Campaign on Monday, September 16. The annual fundraising appeal, which funds United Way initiatives and more than sixty local nonprofit programs and services serving Pierce, Polk and St. Croix County residents, will run through November 18.

United Way St. Croix Valley's three focus areas are meeting basic and emergency needs, strengthening children and families and promoting health and independence. Each year a Campaign Chair works to ensure significant funds are raised to support these areas, but this year United Way has three chairs, one for each county served--Jeff Johnson, President/CEO First National Bank of River Falls for Pierce; Dan Draxler, President/CEO Bremer Bank for Polk; and John Malmberg, President/CEO First American Bank for St. Croix.

"We are excited to have three Campaign Chairs this year because we have people who really know and care about each of the counties we serve," said United Way St. Croix Valley Executive Director John Coughlin.

"United Way strives to build strong communities just like your local bank, which is why we are all proud to serve as chairs of the 2013 campaign," said Malmberg. "By giving a single gift you can ensure a broad range of services are available in our communities."

You don't normally get to hear and see the gratitude we receive from the agencies we fund--this year we want to show you, because their thanks are meant for you.

Northwoods Homeless Shelters, Inc. announced that the United Way St. Croix Valley awarded a grant of $3,000 to its homeless shelter program in Polk County. This award will be used to support case management and client assistance (food and transportation).

"We are excited to have the opportunity to partner with United Way St. Croix Valley to address the issue of homelessness in Polk County and we are grateful for their support," said Virginia Ormsby, the Administrative Director of Northwoods.

The mission of the Northwoods Homeless Shelters is to provide emergency shelter to homeless families and individuals in our county and the surrounding area, provide support and case management while our residents are addressing the issues that caused the homeless situation, and assist them in the process of identifying and moving into affordable, permanent housing.

Northwoods Homeless Shelters has been serving homeless families and individuals in Polk County since 1998. From 1998-2012, this nonprofit agency has provided 31,647 shelter nights to 872 men, women and children.
