Happy Holidays! christmas lights bike 2

Ho! Ho! HO! The holidays are here. And we, at B3, are VERY much in the seasonal spirit. Our 6th annual B3 Christmas Lights Bike Ride is coming up on Saturday, December 14th at 7:00 PM. Together we'll ride our bikes around the neighborhood to look at the beautiful holiday decorations and lights, and then return to the café to share in a little holiday cheer. As part of the festivities we are hosting a toy drive benefiting Parramore Kidz Zone (details below!). Also, after the ride, Santa Claus will be here at the café (we hear he's a fan of this month's seasonal latte). So join us for a truly heart-warming night. Live music by Tommy Copper will add to the fun.

December Beers: Cheers to Beers full of Holiday Cheer

The holidays, however hectic, are still an occasion for making time for friends. Come on in with your peeps and catch up with one another. All this month we're serving brews worth bonding over.

  Shiner holiday cheer

Shiner Holiday Cheer, TX - Happy Holidays from the "Little Brewery" in Shiner, TX. Shiner Cheer is an Old World Dunkelweizen brewed with Texas peaches and roasted pecans. The malty flavors of this dark wheat ale are enhanced through the use of malted barley and wheat. And Kräusening ensures a smoothness that makes the subtle peach and pecan flavors all the more satisfying. May your days be merry and bright and your Shiner be cold.

Bell's Christmas Ale, MI - Christmas Ale doesn't contain any spices: all of the dry, toasted notes & subtle toffee flavors come from the 100% Michigan-grown barley, custom malted by Briess Malting, while a blend of hops from Michigan & the Pacific Northwest lend earthy, herbal aromas. At 5.5% ABV, it stands as a smooth, highly drinkable beer intended to complement holiday menus, not overshadow them.

Highland Thunderstruck Coffee Porter, NC - This robust porter has a full body with some hints of chocolate from the chocolate malt and midnight wheat. The mild noble hop aroma showcases the roasty flavors and subtle fruit and spice notes of the artisan-roasted Fair Trade/Organic coffee of Black Mountain, NC's Dynamite Roasting Co.

Wine: Team Syrah or Zinfandel? Which Side Are You On?

   pinot noir grape

On the surface, Syrah  (or Shiraz , as it's known to the Aussies ) and Zinfandel  appear to be very similar, BUT, not so fast! There are some nice, subtle differences between the two worth noting. Syrah tends to have blue and black fruit, huge tannin and, in colder climates or with a more Old World style, a distinct gaminess, like venison or pheasant. Zinfandel , on the other hand, has a lot of red fruit and jammy berries and almost always, a lack of significant tannin.

Yet, both can have a huge amount of black pepper in the nose and in the finish (especially "old vine" Zin). Current Zin styles and the New World style of Syrah (wines from the US, Australia , Latin America and New Zealand ) will have incredibly ripe fruit.

Think YOU can taste the difference? This month's wine selections offer you a wonderful opportunity to try.

Delta Luna Zinfandel, Lodi, CA - Medium bodied and fragrant with the scent of blackberries very evident on the nose, along with cherries and currants. A beautiful seasonal wine selection.

Rosenblum Vinter's Cuvee Syrah, CA - Smooth, rich blackberries collide with a hedonistic mustiness of dusty earth and chewy gaminess. The heady aromas of creamy oak and bright, spicy fruit develop a dark profile of boysenberry and black fruit across the palate. The finish is long and silky.
