HB 388 Passes Overwhelmingly in Louisiana Senate

Unsafe Abortion Protection Act Passes By Bipartisan Vote of 34 to 3

Rep. Hoffmann (R-West Monroe), Bioethics Defense Fund; Dorinda Bordlee, Representative Katrina Jackson (D-Monroe), Louisiana Right to Life; Benjamin Clapper
HB 388, the Unsafe Abortion Protection Act, authored by Representative Katrina Jackson
(D-Monroe), and carried on the Senate Floor by Senator Sharon Weston Broome (D-Baton Rouge), passed the Louisiana Senate by a bip
artisan vote of 34 to 3.
Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life, applauded the vote:

"Louisiana Right to Life is thrilled that the Senate passed HB 388. Protecting women through common-sense regulations is something we all should stand behind. HB 388 will protect women from the Louisiana abortion industry, which is often more interested in selling abortion, than the health and safety of women. We commend Rep. Jackson for authoring the bill and Sen. Broome for moving this legislation through the Senate Floor.

Dorinda Bordlee, senior counsel of the Bioethics Defense Fund and principle architect of the bill, said the following about the vote:

"We applaud the Louisiana Senate, Representative Jackson, and Senator Broome for passing this important legislation.
As the 5th Circuit Opinion stated, admitting privileges are patient centered protections, and in Louisiana, we are now one step closer to having these common-sense regulations put into law."

Now that HB 388 has passed the Senate Floor, it heads to Governor Jindal's desk after a procedural concurrence vote in the House. The Unsafe Abortion Protection Act was drafted by the Bioethics Defense Fund in collaboration with Louisiana Right to Life.
