Lithium Batteries Follow Up
August 2014

The U.S. DOT has published a final rulemaking related to new changes regarding lithium batteries. The changes are voluntary now but effective January 1, 2015 they become mandatory.

The new rules align the current US regulations with international regulations, and maintain current US / FAA requirements under IATA USG -02 for lithium metal batteries restrictions on passenger aircraft.

The greatest impact of this new rulemaking will be for those shippers that ship lithium batteries by ground in the US under current Special Provisions 188 and 189.

For those shippers that have been shipping by air using IATA / ICAO, you will not feel much of an impact.

The lithium battery handling label will become very popular on most shipments that contain lithium batteries.

There are numerous changes, clarifications and revisions to the US CFR-49, for specific topic please see the federal register link. http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2010-01-11/html/2010-281.htm

Please feel free to contact us for any specific questions concerning your lithium battery shipment.
