Webinar: The Intersection of Suicide Research and Public Health Practice: Suicide and Domestic Violence

Webinar: Built Environment Approaches for Improving Community Health        

On Thursday, May 9, at 1:30pm - 2:30pm Eastern Time, APHA will host a webinar on how our neighborhoods and communities where we live, learn, work and play have an impact on physical activity levels, access to healthy food, transportation behaviors, and ultimately, health outcomes. This webinar will feature two counties that have taken different approaches to changing the built environment around them in order to improve the health of their communities. Resource: STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) Tool Kit for Health Care Providers 

Created by CDC's Injury Center, the  STEADI Tool Kit gives health care providers the information and tools they need to assess and address their older patients' fall risk. Use the STEADI to incorporate fall risk assessment and fall prevention into public health practice and enhance your efforts to help older adults stay healthy and independent. Webcast: "Three Ways the Community Guide Makes the LHD Worker's Job Easier"  

NACCHO is pleased to announce Part I of NACCHO's web-based screencast series, "Three Ways the Community Guide Makes the LHD Worker's Job Easier." The series teaches LHDs how to: (1) use Task Force recommendations from the Community Guide to quickly identify prevention approaches that work; (2) access systematic review findings from the Community Guide to enhance your grants; and  (3) use resources from the Community Guide to promote dialog with multi-sector stakeholders. Funding Opportunity: Family Violence Prevention and Services Grants to States for Domestic Violence Shelters and Support Services  

Administered by the Administration on Children, Youth, and Families (ACYF), this funding opportunity announcement is designed to: (1) assist States in efforts to increase public awareness about, and primary and secondary prevention of, family violence, domestic violence, and dating violence; and (2) assist States in efforts to provide immediate shelter and supportive services for victims of family violence, domestic violence, or dating violence (42 U.S.C. 10401 et seq.). News: Suicide Rates Increase in Middle-aged Americans

CDC reports that suicide rates in adults between the ages of 35 and 64 increased 28 percent between 1999 and 2010, while suicide rate changes for younger and older groups were comparatively small. Suicide deaths have surpassed deaths from motor vehicle crashes recently in the United States.   In 2010 there were 33,687 deaths from motor vehicle crashes and 38,364 suicides. News: Motorcyclist Deaths Increase in 2012         

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) report a nine percent increase in motorcyclist deaths in 2012. This all-time high is the 14th out of the last 15 years that motorcyclist deaths have increased. The new report provides a state-by-state look at motorcyclist fatalities. Resource: Medical Home in Children and Adolescents Exposed to Violence   

The American Academy of Pediatrics provides pediatricians and all medical home teams with the resources they need to modify practice operations to more effectively identify, treat, and refer children and youth who have been exposed to or victimized by violence. Click here to learn more. 

Resource: Trauma-Informed Domestic Violence Services   

The National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma, and Mental Health (NCDVTMH), in partnership with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV), announced a new resource that supports trauma-informed approaches to domestic violence service provision. The resource combines a trauma-informed approach with a domestic violence victim advocacy perspective to provide a more integrated framework for working with survivors. This framework can bridge perspectives and build collaboration between fields. Click here to learn more.
