The Sending of Gifted Leaders - Regional Assignments

On Wednesday, February 18, final year MDiv and MA-Diaconal Ministry students and their families gathered together for a Regional Assignment debriefing.

The spring ELCA Regional Assignment Consultation (affectionately known as "the draft") was held on Feb 17-18. Wartburg Seminary had 30 candidates assigned to Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. The church is ready for them and they for the mission of the church. Wartburg Seminary is known as a seminary that consistently sends pastors (through degree and TEEM programs), diaconal ministers, and associates in ministry that are ready to hit the ground running in ministry settings.  Bishops consistently report that they appreciate the collaborative spirit, contextual interpretation, commitment to the Gospel, and humble confidence that Wartburg graduates bring to the church.

Rev. Amy Current, Dean for Vocation and WTS representative at the draft, has this challenge for us to consider, "I love assignment!  It is a time to celebrate called, named, prepared, and ready leaders to serve in our church. Yet for all that we hear about retiring clergy, part-time calls, shrinking congregations, it is evident by both the numbers and the passion in the room that there is a need for rostered leaders across our church. The number of potential first call openings outweighed the number of available candidates by approximately 40% in this round. Many congregations will continue to wait. I believe we can do something about this shortage and need. God has gifted leaders among us waiting to be invited to serve in ministry. We, as a church, are called to recognize the gifts of those around us from young to older and then tell them about the gifts we see in them, pray for them, and then invite them to consider becoming a pastor, diaconal minister, deaconess, or associate in ministry.  Invite them to come and see how God may be calling.  I believe this is the time to send leaders to seminary. We should not be afraid of the future church but instead step with confidence into God's future proclaiming the Gospel loud and clear inviting others to join us in this vital ministry."

Wartburg Seminary's Faculty and Students Speak on Internship Experience
This past week, WTS students received their internship assignments for congregations or agency settings all over the country. An internship provides students with a significant contextualized experience in ministry as a fundamental component of their theological education. The full-time internship program is held prior to the final year for MDiv students. It allows students to get a feel for a church or agency setting for an entire year and then come back to campus to reflect theologically on their experience.
