100th Anniversary of Cornerstone

On November 10, WTS commemorated the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Wartburg Seminary campus buildings. That cornerstone can be found in the southeast corner of Fritschel Hall. It would take two years after the laying of the cornerstone in 1914 for the buildings to be completed; they would be dedicated in September of 1916.

Also on November 10, Wartburg celebrated the anniversary of two other important dates in the life of the church. The date marked the 161st anniversary of the start of classes at Wartburg Seminary, and it also represented the 531st anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther.

"Considering Your Call" Weekend

Wartburg Seminary's "Considering Your Call" discernment event took place November 8-10.  Participants came from Hawaii, Florida, and points in between.  It was a weekend of fun, fellowship, and conversation around the question, "How is God calling me?"  On the Saturday night of the event, the Wartburg community gathered for the semi-annual Coffeehouse where guests, students, and faculty shared their many talents!  Please join us for the next "Considering Your Call" event March 14-16, 2015.

Rural Plunge

Since the majority of ELCA churches are located in rural or small town settings, Wartburg Seminary requires M.Div. students to take a rural ministry course or participate in a rural experience such as the Rural Plunge as preparation for serving congregations in these communities. The Rural Plunge option of preparing for rural ministry offers Wartburg students a field experience observing agricultural and other rural enterprises in operation, conversing with community and congregational leaders, and learning about the resources and challenges that affect the quality of life in a rural setting. Second Year M.Div. student, Jennifer Michael, who attended this year's Rural Plunge, said of the experience, "The context of a rural community was something that I have never experienced before.  However, after this weekend I was able to connect with the unique gifts and challenges that come within rural ministry.  So much of the need in our church today is to serve rural communities and I believe intensive immersion courses like the Rural Plunge Weekend can prepare future leaders to interpret the distinctive context of rural town and country setting.  This was definitely way out of my 'comfort zone,' but it has excited and energized me to think of all the many ways that God might call me to serve God's church."
