Our Mission
Wartburg Theological Seminary serves Christ's church through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America by being a worship-centered community of critical theological reflection where learning leads to mission and mission informs learning.
The community embodies God's mission by stewarding resources for engaging, equipping, and sending collaborative leaders who interpret, proclaim and live the gospel of Jesus Christ for a world created for communion with God and in need of personal and social healing.

A Stitch in Time - For Graduation

By Lisa Konzen (MDiv Senior)

When Rosalina (Rosy) Rivera returned to her home congregation, St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Richardson, Texas, for Palm Sunday, she was presented with a graduation banner a woman in the congregation made for her. "It was EXACTLY what I wanted and I cried when I first saw it," Rosy says.

Wartburg Theological Seminary has a long tradition of requesting that home and internship congregations make banners for graduating students. Each year, student banners line the walls of the refectory on the Wartburg campus as commencement weekend nears. And then, as students are sent out to serve the church, the banner goes with them serving not only as a remembrance of their graduation from Wartburg but also the congregations that played an integral role in forming them for leadership. If you are connected to a Women of the ELCA group, please remind participants that this year all registrations will be online. Women lacking access to the internet are encouraged to call Dr. Gwen Sayler at 563-589-0302 to register over the phone. Learn more.

Sierra Leone's Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia Visits WTS

On Thursday, March 21, Wartburg Seminary was honored with a very special guest when H.E. Rev. Dr. Ambassador Marie Barnett, Sierra Leone's ambassador to the Republic of Liberia, came to the Wartburg campus for a formal dinner of about fifty persons - faculty, staff, students, spouses and families. Both the ambassador and her husband, Bishop Tom Barnett, graduated from Wartburg Seminary in 1994. The visit was hosted by Wartburg's Center for Global Theologies. Dr. Winston Persaud, the Director of the Center for Global Theologies, called the evening with the ambassador, "a deeply moving experience." He added, "Ambassador Barnett expressed how she was sincerely touched by the welcome and hospitality, and she publicly credited WTS for what she has achieved since her graduation, serving in both the arenas of church and state."

Do You Know Someone Eligible for Retirement Income Assistance?
Some retired ELCA leaders and churchworkers who helped shape this church may now be experiencing financial hardship. To support these servants, the ELCA established the ELCA Special Needs Retirement Fund in 1993, which Portico and the ELCA co-administer. It provides extra income to eligible retired churchworkers and their surviving spouses. Over the past few years, Portico and the ELCA have expanded the Fund's eligibility criteria to extend benefits to more people. Find out if you or someone you know is eligible.
