2013 Interim Debriefing

This January, as part of their J-Term experiences, Wartburg Seminary students traveled to Germany, Guyana, Namibia, Mexico, Milwaukee, Western North Dakota, and Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. An on-campus course on Domestic Violence was also held. On February 7th, students gathered to share these J-Term experiences with the campus community through an Interim Debriefing.

M.Div. Junior, Jon Brudvig, who spent J-Term in Guyana, saw great value in the Interim Debriefing; he shared, "I really appreciated the opportunity to understand my own experiential cross-cultural experience within the broader context of what my fellow students did. Engaging with other students, listening to their public presentations, and participating in a multi-cultural prayer service helped me to appreciate just how transformative our respective J-term experiences were. It was evident that we were all challenged, transformed, and inspired by our respective J-term experiences."

Tanner Howard, a M.Div. Middler, who was in Namibia this January, agrees: "I really do think that the debriefing that we do is important to what we do here. The J-term experiences we have as students are so formative to our future ministries, and getting the chance to really talk about what we did and learned and debrief our experiences with others is necessary after the types of J-terms we have here at Wartburg." Dedication of Restored Chancel Window

This past fall, the stained glass window in the chancel of the Loehe Chapel was removed for cleaning and repair. Its removal left the campus with a rather unattractive plywood-blocked window to look at everyday in the chapel. A group of students planned and executed a temporary installation to enhance the visual focus of the seminary's worship space. The color of the cloth covering the plywood window chaged with the liturgical season. The installation remained until the window was recently restored.

On February 4, the campus gathered in the chapel with a festive dedication of the restored chancel window. Reflections on the window were offered through the course of the service by Mary Wiggins (M.Div. Middler), Dr. Ralph Quere, Dr. Duane Priebe, and Visiting Professor Jan Rippentrop. In her reflection, Mary Wiggins spoke of the beauty of stained glass art: "Stained glass windows are beautiful art. There is something mystical about light fixed with color and steeped with symbolism and history. They are a beautiful interplay with the creation of people and the creation of God." She continued by stressing the significance of the window in Loehe Chapel , "(The window we welcome back today) is part of our life here and the image of  Christ simply pointing out there beyond our view symbolizes our formation."
