 2013 J-Term at Wartburg Seminary
(Carina Schiltz, Tammy Barthels, and Doug Dill at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation)

J-term is an academic session that provides students with an opportunity for immersion and learning outside of the traditional classroom. This January, students are traveling to Germany (follow their blog); Guyana; Namibia; Mexico; Milwaukee, WI; Western North Dakota; and Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (South Dakota). An on-campus course on Domestic Violence is also being held.

(Heidi Anderson, Jen Dahle, and (daughter) Emma Dahle in Guyana)

MDiv Middler, Anne Van Kley is in Namibia this January. Before leaving, Anne said of her upcoming trip, "WTS has a long history with Namibia which has always fascinated me, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the people and learning what the Lutheran church looks like in the different parts of Namibia."

Carina Schiltz, a MDiv Junior, is spending J-Term at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Carina says she's being impacted by the people she's meeting in the sacred land of the Paha Sapa in the the Black Hills: "Many share their life story, culture, and language. Edwin, who I met at an assisted living, shared his passion for teaching Lakota, saying that there is no word for goodbye. Instead, it's 'doksha ake' or 'we'll do it again later.'"

(Dr. Craig Nessan, Bruce Burbank, Josh Johnson,
Shannon Johnson, and Dan Baldwin in Germany)

"It's exciting!" MDiv Middler,

Mary Wiggins, says of her J-Term in Mexico. "This is the first time that students in both the Spanish language class and the Hispanic language concentration are together on this immersion in Mexico City. I am really looking forward to just about everything on this trip."

Returning students will share their J-Term experiences with the campus community on Feb 7th at an "interim debriefing."

As we enter into this penitential time offasting and denial, our repentance again renews us in our baptismal identities. Lent during lectionary cycle C is rich with readings inviting us into the cruciform way of life abundant which is both the gift and promise of Jesus in baptism.
