Advent at the Calanternstle

On Sunday, December 9, Wartburg Seminary celebrated the season of Advent by hosting "Advent at the Castle." This annual event included a service of lessons and carols in the chapel. Members of the Wartburg Community were asked to reflect on what about Advent is most meaningful to them:

"The sense of anticipation. First and foremost, the anticipation of Jesus' birth as we get closer to Christmas. Secondly, the anticipation of being with family and friends as we gather together during this time and reconnect with the spirit of Christmas in our hearts."

Rebecca Morris, MDiv Junior

"Advent invites us to ask, 'What do I believe?'  Beyond the decorations, 'In whom or in what do I trust above all things?' By dismissing the distractions and resisting the stress, going deeper into our beliefs guides our devotion and our actions."
Norma Cook Everist, Professor of Church and Ministry

"The aspect of Advent that is the most meaningful to me is the waiting. Waiting goes completely against my nature.  I am an extrovert and enjoy doing many things at once.  However, during Advent I like waiting for the birth of the Christ child, for the one who will be and who is the Savior of the world.  Waiting is completely counter-cultural to everything society expects from us.  The waiting, for me, gives me a chance to slow down, be still, and listen for God in the whispers. Waiting truly is a gift from God."
Jealaine Marple, Department for Vocation

"Most meaningful to me is slowing down. Literally. In Minnesota the roads get icy and traffic moves slower, forcing me to take in the sights of God's activity all around me which, during other seasons, I go right passed without noticing."

Brandon Newton, MDiv DL Year C

Advent2012

Music always helps set the tone for me during worship and that is particularly true during Advent.  I especially like the build-up throughout the season from preparing the way, through celebrating the joyous birth of our Lord."

David Murphy, MDiv Senior

WTS Student's Artwork on Display

MDiv Senior Janai Robinson currently has her artwork on display at the Carnegie Stout Public Library in Dubuque. The altarpiece, "Freedom", is a representation and translation of the Law/Gospel painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder and the Two Kingdoms teaching by Martin Luther. Robinson is excited about using her artistic gifts in ministry as a way of encouraging others to use their own gifts. Click here to read and learn more.
