"The Power of Intention"
with Karla Kay (Life Coach, Grief Counselor, and Bikram Yoga Teacher)
The energy of this year is one of freedom, change, and expanding your boundaries. It is my intention to make a deeper connection with you.
What is the difference between Goals vs. Intentions?
Goals involve envisioning a future outcome. Intention is focused on how your are "being" in the present moment. Join me in learning how to live your intentions every day to create the life you desire.
We will meet the third Wednesday of each month from 6:30pm to 9pm. The cost is $13.00 every month. Our first meeting will take place on January 15th!

Happy New Year! Cheers to a fresh start and new beginnings! Have you made your New Year's Resolution yet? According to Statisticbrain.com, People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions. And if you can make it through the rest of January, you have a good chance of lasting a lot longer!
Here are a few New Year's resolutions from the teachers and staff of Bikram Yoga Tempe:
- "This year my resolution is to be me. I have been a mother, wife, sister, blah, blah, blah...This year I am going to find me. The one who lives in there wearing all these hats. The year of introspection."- Reba
- "There are a few, but one of them is to let go of my attachment to others approval and allow myself to be awesome as I see it." -Gabi
- "Review - all the past few years activities, priorities and goals; Redefine - finalize what I need to focus on in the next 12 months; Re-engage - give my 100% and have fun in the process."- Shyam
- "Since I am just out of the fall Teacher Training, my NYR is to grow into the best Bikram Teacher I can be, just like a flower petal blooming, coupled with understanding the students with compassion and to help them in any way I can." -Karen
- "To cut the excess, in every form. Try to live more simply without the stress (all types) created by all the excess BS I seem to surround myself with." -Justin
- "My two main goals are as follows: 1. Work out 365 days this year, starting with a 30 day challenge! 2. Play with my kids more! Really savor each and every sweet moment of their childhood." -Jennifer
- "My news year's resolution is to volunteer more and I'm starting with Hospice of the Valley (I start training at the end of Feb)!"- Audrey
- "Thorough life we learn and grow and sometimes it is through our biggest challenges. I realize life is not only about adversity but it is certainly a part of it. Without it we can't fully understand joy. Hope-- for things unseen is my mantra for 2013."-Alyssha
- "To be present and follow my intuition."- Karla

How do you feel after completing BYT's 10 Year Anniversary 10 week challenge?
I feel fantastic. This fall was a health overhaul! I decided at 44 years old that I was tired of feeling 44 years old. I completed a juice fast for 62 days which coincided with my 10 week yoga challenge. I lost 54 pounds during the challenge/fast!
It is hard to put into words what has changed internally, but I can say this...Remember the energy of those 'greatest days ever' when you were a teenager? I feel like this most days now. My family would tell you, beside the obvious physical change, that I am simply nicer.
So... I am in week 5 of my second 10 week challenge--
the path to nice!
How did this challenge help you?
In the beginning...all I wanted was the damn free T-SHIRT!!! As the challenge progressed, the energy delivered from consistent practice was wonderful. My personal motivation to accomplish more in each posture showed up with consistent practice. I can feel my postures changing! Yoga practice became a journey instead of survival of a 90 minute torture session.
Yoga also helped me through my fast. I don't think I would have had the same mental resolve for being consistent with my fast without the increased mental QUIET that yoga brings.
Would you recommend Bikram Yoga and our studio to others?
This is it. After 44 years of searching for a form of exercise I WANT to do, Bikram Yoga is the only exercise I've found I commit to with consistency.
As for the BYT? It feels like a TEAM effort all the time from every one at BYT. It was incredibly helpful to have the support of the teachers during this overhaul as there were many days the detox of yoga and fasting was more than I could take to even stay in the room.
Thanks for everyone at BYT for their love and support during my challenge! Sweaty hugs all around!!

What is a yoga championship? "It's a beautiful celebration of the body and mind," says Rajashree Choudhury found of the nonprofit USA Yoga Federation (click on this link to become a USA Yoga member).
Courtney Mace, 2008 International Champion explained "There is always a competition, but it's not between people. It happens every time you step into the hot room, and it's a competition between the ego and the soul. And the soul always wins. It has to. So by the time you get on the stage, there is no competition anymore. There is only your soul."
If you are interested in competing please let BYT know as soon as possible! We will gladly arrange coaching and support for you as you prepare. BYT teacher, Gabi, is a great coach!

Cobra Pose | Bhujangasana
Medical Benefits for Cobra Pose:
Bhujanga, the Sanskrit word for 'snake', is derived from the root bhuj, which means "to bend or curve." The king cobra can glide forward while lifting the upper third of its body upright. Try to emulate this snake's powerful yet fluid motion when you practice. Imagine your legs as the snake's tail, reaching long behind you as you curve your spine to lift your chest.
Notes taken from Bikram's orange book: "As the spine is the source of energy in the human body, integrating the spine leads to a balanced, healthy and successful life. A healthy spine equals a healthy life.
This is one of the most difficult postures to learn and to understand. So we need two keys here. First, when you finish holding the arched position, don't suddenly collapse back down to the floor. Lower your head, neck and upper body slowly and smoothly, using the strength of your back and spine. We never use any abrupt diving or jerking motions; that's how you injure yourself. Controlling your movements this way also builds will power and discipline.
Second, keep your elbows close to the ribs. As you come up, try to slide them down toward the hip bones, as if you were going to touch them with the elbow points. This moves your shoulders and keeps them down, where they belong. The trapezius muscles--the sheets of muscle just under the skin of the back, between the shoulders and neck--should protrude and become more visible."
- One of the best all around conditioners for the entire body
- Strengthens the lumbar spine, relieving pain and combating slipped or herniated discs, scoliosis and arthritis in that region
- Improved digestion
- Relief from menstrual disorders
- Improved appetite
- Raises low blood pressure
- Improves the functioning of the liver and spleen
- Strengthens the deltoids, trapezius, and triceps muscles in the upper body
"Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time.
Wishing you all vitality, abundance, and well-being in 2013!
Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories.
Share a funny story with someone whose spirits are dragging. A good laugh can be very good medicine.
- Try to understand a point of view that is different from your own. Few things are 100 percent one way or another.
- Examine the demands you make on others.
- Lighten up. When you feel like blowing your top, ask yourself, "Will it matter a week from today?"
- Take better care of yourself. Remember, you're all you've got. Pass up that second helping. You really don't need it. Vow to eat more sensibly. You'll feel better and look better, too.
Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look 10 years younger.
Don't be afraid to say, "I love you." Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world.
If you have love in your life, consider yourself blessed, and vow to make this the best year ever."- Ann Landers
