Breaking News: NFPA 70E 2015 ships in print
Yesterday NFPA notified us that they are shipping NFPA 70E 2015 within 48 hours. Note that the standard goes into effect within 15 days of printing according to the forward. The new standard which is available now in .pdf form has stunning changes including:

  • Elimination of HRC 0 moving all electrical work into arc rated clothing (non melting clothing required under AR clothing)
  • New RISK BASED Assessment Tables with strong requirements for proper equipment maintenance
  • Elimination of PPE for all closed door operations (unwisely this covers ALL voltages) but the chance that any company meets the maintenance requirements is slim
  • Term HRC is gone.  Look for clothing companies to start using ARC
  • Most ARC PPE in Tables is raised. No lowering for risk in tables
  • Calculations emphasized. Tables usefulness now limited and requiring less or much more PPE

e-Hazard Recognized at National Safety Council by OH&S Magazine
e-Hazard wins for NFPA 70E TTT at the NSC from OH&S!

[Yes, that was way to many acronyms!] OH&S Magazine New Product of the Year was awarded at the National Safety Council Expo for the e-Hazard's OSHA Electrical Safety NFPA 70E Train the Trainer  program.  This unique program provides training materials to provide NFPA 70E training using the standard for electricians in low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV).   Only e-Hazard provides TTT and licenses the materials to trainers with free updates as the standard changes.  This program has been used by companies starting with Alcoa as far back as 2004. Many companies have qualified trainers who use NFPA 70E but don't have time to develop quality training materials to present and need support on some of the complicated questions surrounding NFPA 70E and OSHA electrical safety standards.  e-Hazard comes to the rescue with a TTT that covers all the material, helps develop training skills and answers the in-depth questions that always arise for NFPA 70E.  This material is used by more NFPA 70E members than all our competitors combined and over 600 trainers have been through the class and use e-Hazard.com NFPA 70E training materials.

    Burning Question

    Q. The 2015 70E has eliminated HRC "0" and all the HRC's. What shall I do with existing HRC "0" labels. Do I need to scrape them out?  Do I need to affix any kind of label which distinguishes them from other equipment having other levels of risk category?

    A. The HRC categories were never intended to be used with calculations.  The term has now been removed from the standard but the levels are the same and most companies will call them ARC's (Arc Rated Categories).  This is a misnomer from IEEE 1584.  The cotton clothing requirement is still there in Annex H.3 but this is not a requirement.  I recommend you use ARC (the old HRC) 0 or define your own categories to show required clothing.  If you choose the risk route in the new 2015 standard you could remove PPE requirements for operation of those pieces of equipment with the doors closed, if they are properly maintained, properly installed and no evidence of impending failure (this is fuzzy performance-based language).  We have done a few surveys and found that most companies do not use NFPA 70B, NETA MTS or manufacturer's instructions to maintain ALL equipment so wholesale using this risk based approach and cutting out PPE is NOT recommended by e-Hazard.

We do think the committee did something good by encouraging maintenance and eliminating the need for PPE on LV single phase equipment in most cases.  If they had limited the NO PPE approach to <240V single phase it would have been quite welcome as these systems rarely if ever pose an arc flash hazard.  However on 3 phase equipment, this is a dangerous approach.  The pendulum has swung.  We think it should retract.
