Burn Up the Myth: The Difference in Gloves
|
|
Q. What is the difference between Class O and Class OO gloves?
A. From a shock perspective Class O vs. Class OO has little difference. Class O has a maximum use voltage of 1000V and Class OO has a maximum use voltage of 500V. Since sometimes 480V systems could have greater than 500V we recommend using Class O for 480V systems.
Most choose Class O for two reasons:
- Class O is thicker so they last longer. One of our larger clients who uses our TTT materials for their training did a study on two larger facilities with over 200 pairs of gloves and found that Class O lasted about one year longer than Class OO.
- Class O is also better in arc flash because of that thickness.
If you are working 120V-240V Class OO is fine. On 480V we recommend Class O. And Black or Blue are the most protective colors for arc flash in research to date.
