AESOP'S FABLE IN SPACE For about 90% of the movie, the ranger and his son are the only two characters we interact with. Now that would be fine, except that Will Smith plays a character who has learned to conquer fear and in the process, appears to have been left completely emotionless. Real-life son Jaden Smith doesn't fare much better, as he essentially wears the same timid look throughout the film. Read more...

FAMILY FIRST Family is what it's all about here: not the family of origin, but the family that stands by you in your darkest hour. Whether it's Torretto's unwillingness to let Letty go, his recognition that O'Conner loves his sister and must learn to accept him, or one character's sacrifice for another, we have family in full focus here, offering forgiveness, grace, comfort, and "back up" in every situation.

TOLKIEN AND THE GREAT WAR: THE THRESHOLD OF MIDDLE-EARTH Tolkien was able to use his experiences from the Great War to help us see our intrinsic worth. Devotees of Tolkien owe a debt of gratitude to John Garth for digging through the trenches to create this masterpiece and for helping us to understand Tolkien in ways we might have missed. Fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy were rather perplexed over the headlines. The past two days, over a dozen online fanzines and other sources, apparently not afraid to "borrow" from each other, asserted that Mortensen "turned down" the role of Aragorn in the Hobbit movies. LOMGMIRE I'm a sucker for Westerns, so it was a no-brainer that I'd give A&E's original series, based on the Craig Johnson novels, a shot. Following the exploits of Wyoming sheriff and grieving widower Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor, The Matrix), it straddles two worlds: the white rural world of farmers, loggers, hunters, and natural gas, and that of the Native American reservation "next door."
