First, just seeing this on the big screen is worth it. There were times when I got chills: the swell of the iconic score, the roar of the T-Rex in big theater surround sound, and that awesome moment when John Hammond says, "Welcome to Jurassic Park!" This is still blockbuster, popcorn, have-some-fun-at-the-theater movie making at its best. Whether it's worth seeing in 3D, however, is another story. Read more...

Down the Shore, Lego Star Wars, The Sweeney
|
I really wanted The Sweeney to be awesome: it stars Ray Winstone and Damian Lewis. But unfortunately, it attempts to be as colloquial as Layer Cake but fails to be as nuanced. It follows a band of rough cops who try to detect the crimes before they happen and bust the would-be perpetrators by whatever means possible . Read more...

SEVEN THINGS I LEARNED FROM THE BIBLE SERIES They suffered more than you and I probably ever will for their beliefs. Most were killed. And yet, because of their boldness, we have the right to complain when something doesn't go how we want it. When the sword comes out for us talking about Jesus, only then might we begin to understand what those in the Bible dealt with. But not until. Read more...

JESUS TRUMPS ZOMBIES AND "THRONES" The Bible finished its five week cable run on Sunday night just like it began it: beating zombies. The final hour of the final episode of the epic miniseries drew 12.33 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings figures, compared to 12.29 million for The Walking Dead and 4.4 million for The Game of Thrones. NOT TODAY: INTERVIEW WITH BRETT MARTZ '27 million people worldwide live in some kind of slavery. It can be overwhelming. I love the Mother Teresa quote, "If you can't feed a hundred people, then just feed one." Basically, we have to start somewhere, so start with what you can handle and work from that place.' For all its theories about meaning in The Shining, Room 237 is really about the nature of interpretation itself, (or to use a two dollar word, hermeneutics). Consider especially the interpretation of scripture. Whole sermons are built on a single verb in a passage - or perhaps even its tense. Such readings may be supported by a great deal of scholarship. Does biblical meaning change from one time to another - from one person to the next? To say it is static may limit the ways God speaks to us. To say it is fluid may strip it of all meaning. THE WRATH OF KHAN Watching The Wrath of Khan back in the day, I found myself liking Star Trek for the first time. Decades later, I see why. Sure, there's some bad acting and some dated special effects. But this film holds ideas that take us past cheesy into deep: What would you do if you lost someone you loved? What would you sacrifice to keep that from happening? Read more...

OFF ROAD ADVENTURES In Cars 2, we glimpsed the larger world of Cars; we saw boats, trains, and planes. It seems those guys have unique adventures too. I'm not entirely sure how exciting a train's life could be, seeing as how it's confined to its tracks, but a plane's life... well, that could be interesting. Apparently, Disney and Pixar agree. Planes, orginally intended as a direct-to-video release, will arrive at theaters later this summer.

One of the most surprising things about 42 is that Harrison Ford isn't in it. I mean he is, but... Let's be honest, kind but honest; in recent films, Harrison Ford always seems to play some grumpy version of himself. This time, he does something different. Find out what motivated him to dive into the character of Ricky Brach. Read more...

"The more macho quote, unquote you are, the more macho your friends and acquaintances are, the better. That's how you gauge coolness which is the ultimate thing in that world. But like I was saying, that's just the exterior. " Read more...
