Les Miserables
A Work of Art Paula Parker
It is not often that you see a movie that is a work of art. Les Mis is visually stunning with an epic feel from the opening scene. After Anne Hathaway sang, "I Dreamed a Dream" the audience at my screening erupted into spontaneous applause. There were several other moments of applause throughout the film, as if the audience had to find a way to release their emotion.
A Moving, Powerful Experiment That Works Yo
The success of this endeavor rests squarely on the talents of the performers, and fortunately the entire cast is more than equal to the task. First of all, as far as I'm concerned, you can just give the Oscar to Anne Hathaway. She gives such a raw, emotional, heart-breaking performance that it just takes your breath away, and when she sings her powerful, wrenching version of "I Dreamed A Dream", it shows just what an excellent choice it was to mix singing with acting performances.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Jacob Sahms
I went, rather reluctantly, to see Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth. I'm not prone to go for the hype, and splitting my least favorite J.R.R. Tolkien novel into separate moves didn't seem like a good idea. But I came out of the experience with some diamonds, er, gold, in the rough.
Yo Should I see it in the high frame rate? Should I skip that? Should I see it again in the high frame rate, or see the standard version? Does it even make any difference? Well friends, I have made the sacrifice and have gone out to see the film both ways to provide a little insight into all of this for you. No, no, don't thank me, just think of it as an early Christmas gift.

Parental Guidance Darrel Manson
Nearly all of your films carry PG ratings. Is that by design or just a niche you've fallen into?
Certainly not by design. It's so funny because Reefer Madness is so not that movie. After that kind of launched my career, I was offered every possible indie cocaine fiend, heroin, you name it, that's what I was offered. And I chose She's the Man. (I really responded to the Twelfth Night aspect of the story.) So I chose this teen girl comedy and then when that worked so well people were not giving me the Reefer Madness scripts; they were just giving me a lot of the family stuff.

Playing for Keeps
Most Wonderful Time of the Year? Dice
When it comes to the holidays, we all know that the movies people will really be paying attention to are the blockbusters. But the studios always like to slip us "little" movies, too, to keep the, uh, adults occupied while the "kiddies" go ape. Here's a little rom, a little com. A little.

News About What's in the Works for Film and Faith Managing Editor Greg Wright
A Talk with Jonathan Bock At its core, the story of Les Misérables is the battle between justice and mercy. Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) believes in a world where you get what you deserve. Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) believes in a world where you don't get what you deserve. Instead you get grace. The entire film is a love story to our faith. The final line of the film is "to love another person is to see the face of God." If Christians can't get behind that, we are idiots!

On the Road
Kerouac's Search Darrel Manson
On the Road is a kind of pilgrimage to self. Such pilgrimages characterize mid-20th Century America. The Beats, and later other counter-cultural groups, sought a new kind of freedom-freedom from convention.
