Special Coverage of The Hobbit from Editor Mark Sommer
Stay Tuned for More Devin Brown
Gandalf tells Bilbo that the adventure will be "very good for you-and profitable too."     At first it seems Gandalf is referring to the one-fourteenth share of Smaug's treasure that has been promised to Mr. Baggins. But by the end of the story, it is clear that Bilbo returns home with a very different kind of treasure, one that will never rust and that thieves cannot break in and steal. In the end Gandalf tells him, "You are not the hobbit that you were." And it's true.
In a different kind of story, Bilbo would have left Bag End as a hobbit who was fond of his tea, handkerchiefs, and second breakfasts, and would have come back home as a warrior who has no interest in these elements from his former life. But this is not the story that Tolkien wants to tell...               Interview Feature  Insights On The Spiritual Themes of the Movie Yo   Tolkien's work has always been rich for discussions of a more philosophical and spiritual tenor, even if that isn't what he intended. In fact, talking with the cast of the film, it's plain to see that they've noticed that as well. Ian McKellan (Gandalf), Richard Armitage (Thorin) and others talk about what we can expect...
Analysis of the TrailersEditor Mark Sommer    There are many things in the clips I've seen that I like, but some that I find rather disconcerting. The two TV Spots released on the Warner Bros YouTube Channel this week illustrate some things I like, and some... well, let me put it this way: I wish PJ hadn't gone there.
     Satire  Michael P.
Karl Rove from Fox News explains, "They were so focused on the Elves and their small businesses, that they could not relate to Hobbits. Over 50% of The Hobbit population owns an Obama phone. They gave the current president huge support over Obamacare because they need it after some pretty heavy Orc raids." Continuing Analysis of the BookAndrew Townsend
Bilbo is in a very difficult situation, but true to his character development, he does not give up. He has realised on this adventure that looking at all the options and weighing them up could well show that there is a way out. And so he begins to develop a cunning plan.     Be sure to check out the rest of our great Hobbit and Tolkien coverage:

Muster of Rohan Report December 6, 2012  After my somewhat gloomy assessment of Hobbit clips yesterday, I thought I would begin with one just posted today by YouTube's The Film Stage Channel. It is a clip from The White Council scene, and I am really excited about it. Well done, Peter! I'm looking forward to more of this! Also... this week's news from Hobbitland. Warner Bros. has released another TV Spot on their YouTube page. Not much new, but here it is.      |

   The Magician's Twin     Greg Wright
C.S. Lewis, the celebrated Oxford don who created Narnia and Mere Christianity, is best known as a storyteller, scholar, and defender of Christianity. But the new book and documentary The Magician's Twin makes the case that Lewis had a lot to say about the growing impact of science on society.
We recently caught up with John West, editor of the book and director of the film, to talk about Lewis, science, and scientism.

     Anna Kerenina
The Wages of Sin Darrel Manson
This treatment of Anna Karenina is a blending of art, storytelling, and morality. It requires attention-not only mentally, but also emotionally and esthetically-to appreciate the richness that is here.

     Rise of the Guardians
   Heroes for the Holidays Dice
There's a real story here about how to be a hero in the world, and what it means to believe. This doesn't hit it out of the park, though, thanks to some odd voice casting. But this is a worthwhile watch, better than Shrek but not quite Pixar.

News About What's in the Works for Film and Faith Managing Editor Greg Wright
The Bible (TV)                Last week, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey screened portions of their History channel miniseries The Bible to a gathering at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL.  We recruited one of the attendees to provide us a brief summary of what attendees saw, with some personal reaction:
The presentation began with Bill Hybels [pastor of Willow Creek] interviewing Mark and Roma onstage. They shared that they filmed the series in the desert of Morocco and that conditions were less than pleasant there most of the time. But they and the actors pushed through and three years later, it's almost ready to air. The projected start date is March, 2013, running five consecutive weeks...

     Wagner & Me
Music's Power and Darkness  Darrel Manson
Early in the film he speaks of the way "music releases forces inside me, and no music does it like Wagner's. . . . But it's no secret that my passion was also shared by him." On screen we see a picture of Adolph Hitler.

     The Dark Knight Rises
   An Epic Conclusion Jacob Sahms

Now on Blu-ray. This is a movie bathed in substance thanks to its plot, its dialogue, its choreography, and its acting. It's certainly more serious than The Avengers, and frankly, rewatching in high definition has more pull for me even than catching the upcoming prequel ( The Hobbit) or horribly cast ( Jack Reacher) in the theater. Plus...
