Skyfall Skyfall

A More (Decently) Human Bond

Jacob Sahms

Without going into more detail, I'm convinced the Bond movies have taken a new, better direction. Craig's Bond stops to stem the bleeding of a fellow agent; he mourns the loss of loved ones; he evaluates himself and the job he does, even imploring another agent to consider getting out of the killing game.

Lincoln Lincoln

A Fascinating Slice of History

Yo

The real genius of Steven Spielberg in Lincoln isn't that he was able to make a film about the process of politics an interesting and riveting drama, but that he was able to do that about something that we already know the outcome of.

Ahhh.... Junk Food

Dice

I do try really hard to find something good to say about every movie I see. But here, this is just a paint-by-numbers teen comedy. And I'm not who this movie is made for. Granted. But still.... This is just a chocolatey mess.

25 Hill Headlines San Diego Festival

Just about every major city these days (and a lot of minor ones, too) has a film festival. The largest ones, like Sundance or the Seattle International Film Festival, stretch on for weeks at a time, drawing major stars and directors to headline screenings and pulling down plenty of press attention in the process.

These days, a lot of Christian festivals are cropping up as well... The list goes on and on. Did we mention the grandaddy of them all, Heartland?

And guess what? There are plenty of films to show at these festivals, and they're getting better and better.

One increasing presence on the Christian festival circuit is former TV star cum filmmaker Corbin Bernsen, working with communities to produce films with big-budget looks with micro-budget local talent...

Michael P. Mordenga Ehud Report:
The HHD (Hobbit Hi-Def) Experience
Satire
IMAX just announced that the new Hobbit movie from New Line Cinema will have HHD (Hobbit High Definition).  This is a movie experience that will emerge the audience into the most realistic Tolkien experience ever.

I thought it weird that the movie ticket takers at IMAX had to check my drivers license.  It made sense during the tech demo of the movie when Bilbo grabbed a pint of draft ale and suddenly the chair in front of me starting pouring draft ale into a cup for me to drink.  With the Extra Sense Technology, you can now enjoy any bit of alcohol that the Hobbits enjoy.

Fight scenes were a bit richer with HHD.  Every time Oakenshield stabbed at an Orc, my chair would stab me in the same place as the movie character...

A Royal Affair A Royal Affair

Enlightenment in Denmark

Darrel Manson

A Royal Affair tells the story of how Enlightenment ideas, so central in our own country's drive for freedom, also transformed Denmark for a while. Danish history is far more interesting (or at least more racy) than American history.

Darrel Manson AFI Fest 2012
Darrel Manson

Hollywood and Highland is something of the epicenter for what the world thinks of as Hollywood.  It is here that stars walk down the red carpet to the Academy Awards ceremony.  It is the place tourist buses drop off loads of people with cameras.

The sidewalks for several blocks have stars with people's names.  Along the street you can find people dressed up like Spiderman or Batman or Mae West for people to have their pictures taken with (a tip is expected.)

For the last few days, this was also the site of one of the best film festivals in the country, AFI Fest.  AFI Fest features some films that could well be major Oscar contenders, foreign films (including several Oscar submissions), and works by up-and-coming filmmakers.

Here are my reports from this year's iteration!

Plus The Cup, Duck Dynasty: Season One, Fire with Fire, Bardem Collection, & More

HJ Staff

Now on Blu-ray. Are we considering the wonder and magic of a season where we should be more focused on giving than receiving, on sharing than taking, on joy rather than our suffering? For me, it depends on whether we're keeping "the main thing in the main thing."
