The Kid's Fright genre seems to be en vogue. How does it stack up to ParaNorman or Frankenweenie? Well, it has an interesting starting place (that might sound familiar): Monsters being scared of US. This has more meat to it than you might expect. It's fun!

News About What's in the Works for Film and Faith Managing Editor Greg Wright
Sinister          You may recall Scott Derrickson's previous supernatural thriller, The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Like Sinister, it was in the Horror genre... and presents a view of Horror that is more, well, sinister and grim than its peers precisely because Derrickson takes the supernatural very seriously.
Derrickson is a Christian working in the Hollywood mainstream, and has been known to ask this very probing question about Horror films: "Why do so many Christians find it odd that a Christian would be working in this genre?
"To me, this genre deals more overtly with the supernatural than any other genre, it tackles issues of good and evil more than any other genre, it distinguishes and articulates the essence of good and evil better than any other genre, and my feeling is that a lot of Christians are wary of this genre simply because it's unpleasant.
"The genre is not about making you feel good, it is about making you face your fears. And in my experience, that's something that a lot of Christians don't want to do."
Today at HJ we've got photos and the trailer for Derrickson's latest...

   Sun Kissed     Darrel Manson
During the Los Angeles Film Festival in June, I had the chance to talk with Maya Stark and Adi Lavy, the directors of Sun Kissed, a documentary about families on the Navajo Reservation that have children with Xeroderma Pigmentosa (XP), a rare genetic disorder that makes exposure to the sun fatal. The children die in their teen or preteen years. The disease occurs much more frequently on the reservation than in the general public.

Stay Tuned for More Hobbit CoverageWhat makes a story Christian?
The title of Devin Brown's new book is sure to raise some eyebrows. How could a world filled with dwarves, elves, goblins, wizards, and hobbits be considered Christian? Brown uses what we know about the author of the famous children's story, along with his attention to detail and careful wording of The Hobbit, to show how J. R. R. Tolkien wove his faith into its pages. In Chapter 1, Brown cites various letters sent by Tolkien to demonstrate how Tolkien himself viewed The Hobbit as "an 'essentially' Christian story." This does not mean there are overt references to Christianity, or even clear allegorical references. As Tolkien famously wrote to Father Murray, a personal friend who had read and commented on proofs of The Lord of the Rings, "the religious element was absorbed into the story." While Tolkien says this was a conscious endeavor for The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit also definitely has Christian elements embedded in the storyline. It is not the overtness of the religious elements, but the worldview of the author, which makes a work "Christian," Brown argues... |

Andrea Arnold's film version of the Emily Bronté classic is about contrasting worlds. This plays out in various ways: rich and working class, nature and humanity's presumption of superiority, even perhaps Christianity and culture.
