Breaking News - Orange County Board of Supervisors Approves Phase 1 of Harbor Revitalization Plan

As we've previously reported was to be expected, during last Tuesday's meeting the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved what is being described as the first phase of landside revitalization construction. This is the estimated $2.1-million-dollar Public Works project that addresses the traffic management needs that are prerequisite to actual construction ground breaking.

The result is that now a public "Notice Inviting Bids" concerning this Public Works project, to be funded 100% by the Dana Point Tidelands Trust, will be advertised. Below are two links for those interested in reading more. The staff report has additional background regarding this now approved project.

Let's be clear here regarding the specifics of what many feel is a very confusing topic: What The County is calling "Harbor Revitalization" at this time is actually landside revitalization only. As this is the case, waterside revitalization, including docks replacement, is technically outside of scope. Meanwhile, the ground breaking on the landside construction itself is still technically pending Board of Supervisors approval. However, we are hoping that the entire landside construction project will soon be approved and waterside reconstruction will also be included within scope. We are advised that both could happen quickly if the Public-Private-Partnership (P3) Request For Proposal that The County is now planning becomes a reality. Click
here to read our take on the proposed public/private partnership in previous Boater Blast. We've also been advised that then (and quite unfortunately, only then) will there be money available to fund replacement of our docks, as was promised back in 1998 by the original harbor redevelopment mission statement.

The timing of above is still to be determined of course, but here, as in all matters important to Dana Point recreational boaters, your Dana Point Boaters Association will continue to stay fully engaged.

Happy Halloween boaters!

Board Approves Phase 1 of Dana Point Harbor Revitalization

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors approved Phase 1 of the Dana Point Revitalization Project (Item S24A), which addresses intersection and roadway improvements. The project includes the intersection and roadway improvements at Casitas Place and Dana Point Harbor Drive and Puerto Place and Dana Point Harbor Drive. The project will improve infrastructure related to traffic signals and to intersection alignments, the addition of turn lanes, utility work, and driveway/sidewalk improvements.

Phase 1 improvements represent the first milestone for the revitalizing Dana Point Harbor. As articulated in the Coastal Development Permit, there are a total of five phases. Concurrent with the improvements, the Board has authorized pursuit of a public-private partnership for the entire project to assist in the successful development of Revitalization.

Dana Point Harbor is truly a magnificent County resource as it facilitates public access to the coast, stimulates economic development, and enhances quality of life. Orange County residents have eagerly waited 18 years to start the project. Having secured Board approval, I am delighted to report that Dana Point Harbor Revitalization has begun.

Please Remember, to keep Dana Point Boaters voice strong, we need your support.
