Just a quick status update to touch base on two completely unrelated topics:
ONE - The next dredging of Dana Point Harbor continues on schedule to begin during the winter next year, 2015/2016.
Approval by the California Coastal Commission is pending and on the agenda for consideration during their meeting next week, Wednesday through Friday, November 12-14 in Half Moon Bay. Click here to read the dredging project description and recommendation to approve by Long Beach Coastal Commission Staff. Click here to see the actual meeting agenda. (It's a long agenda as usual, so if your curious you can save yourself some time by searching for "Dana Point" in the PDF file.) TWO - We've been working for several months on the Commercial Core Revitalization CDP (sans possession of some of the draft rehearing documents, which have been withheld by OC DPH per County policy) and have met with the harbor merchants several times on the construction and parking related concerns all stakeholders share. Then last Friday we had a lengthy meeting with OC DPH, as well as a merchants' representative, to review a preliminary draft of the mitigation recommendations we are making to address slip and dry storage boater issues that we strongly believe require mitigation. Over a dozen mitigation ideas were discussed and initial feedback on some boater recommendations was positive. In other cases, "not so much". Regarding those ideas where feedback was positive, and no surprise really, OC DPH suggests they be addressed subsequent to CDP approval, during construction planning and execution. We'll have our report out to you as well as DP City Council and the Coastal Commission staff sometime this weekend hopefully. We would welcome and very much appreciate hearing other boaters views here, before the rehearing upcoming on November 18th. IN CLOSING, we wish to congratulate Lisa Bartlett on her successful campaign and election as 5th District Supervisor for The County of Orange. We've worked with Lisa in the past in her role as Mayor of Dana Point and want to assure our fellow Dana Point boaters that she has appropriate knowledge/understanding of recreational boaters' concerns and needs. We anticipate Lisa will continue to be both balanced and supportive when she begins work in Santa Ana in January. Best regards, Rodger
