Greetings!
Call it a co-dependent relationship . . .
We need your support. You need our voice.
Dana Point Harbor is entering a hugely transformative era. If all goes as planned, in five years our harbor will bear little resemblance to the harbor we've enjoyed for more than 40 years. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - our old girl needs some work. Nearly every corner of our beloved harbor is in need of renovation and upgrades.
Our docks are in especially poor condition, despite the marinas' best efforts to keep them in shape with routine maintenance and repairs. Docks are uneven; pilings are loose and leaning; concrete is crumbling; wood is rotting; power is unstable. We need new dock boxes, lights, utilities, gates and security.
Our shops and restaurants are in a similar state of decay. Buildings and grounds are showing their age; water lines are bursting. And we're spending a fortune patching this place together.
Perhaps you've read about it. Harbor revitalization is overdue.
But what our harbor looks like in five years will be the outcome of what's happening NOW, whose voices are being heard, whose voices are the loudest. And there are some very strong, influential, and often competing voices speaking out these days as the final plans for our new harbor are nailed together.
The Dana Point Boaters Association is your voice, but it is only as loud as your collective support.
With an unlimited budget, and unlimited real estate, we could all get everything we want. But the reality is, the various players in our harbor are competing for limited funds and limited space, for new buildings, more parking, new restaurants, new shops... and new marinas. We can't all have it all. And who gets what will depend on who speaks and who listens.
Your Dana Point Boaters Association is a not-for-profit advocacy group working on your behalf... our Dana Point boaters. Our influence is only as strong as your support; our successes are your successes. And our expenses are small, but we do have expenses. Our directors and advisors receive zero compensation; there are no free meals, no travel allowances, no perks. Our only rewards are the achievements made on your behalf. But what we do isn't free. There are expenses to keeping our organization afloat - our website and newsletters, public information requests, periodic legal counsel, etc. And we are 100% funded by our boaters' dues and donations.
As we embark on this enormously transformative era for our Harbor, we need your support to keep our voice loud and strong. If you can spare one dollar, ten dollars or 100 dollars to the cause, please take a moment do donate to the DPBA. You have our promise to use every penny on the protection and advancement of affordable recreational boating in Dana Point Harbor.
You will be hearing a lot from us this year. OC Dana Point Harbor recently submitted its coastal development permit (CDP) application to the City of Dana Point to build the new commercial core - that's the shops, restaurants and parking. DPBA recently reviewed the entire application, including hundreds of pages of plans, drawings and studies, and we will be sharing more details with you soon. OC Dana Point Harbor is also preparing its application to build the $30 million dry stack boat storage building (aka boat barn) to replace the existing Embarcadero, as well as initiating an aggressive waterside marina upgrade project. It's really starting now.
As public hearings proceed, as behind-the-scenes meetings are held, as decisions are made on the future of your harbor, whose voice do you want in the room?
You need the Dana Point Boaters Association. And we need your support.
