Joe Chiccarelli Recording The Killers In Las Vegas
Hearing ATC Midrange Clarity

With Ten Grammy wins (including Best Engineered Album for The Raconteurs Consolers of the Lonely) and scores of platinum and gold albums,
Joe Chiccarelli (U2, Beck, Elton John, Rufus Wainwright, Tori Amos, The Strokes, Jason Mraz, The White Stripes) has made good on the famous opportunity Frank Zappa gave him during the recording of "Sheik Yerbouti" - among Zappa's best-selling albums ever.   When the head engineer couldn't make the session, Zappa promoted then-assistant engineer Chiccarelli to take the lead.
Inspired by their transparent midrange, extended low- and high-end, and impressive SPLs, Chiccarelli recently switched from the monitors he had been using for two decades to ATC SCM45A Pro nearfields.
"I had stuck by the same monitors for twenty years because they offered the kind of phase coherence that allowed me to hear, for example, small differences in mic position," explained Chiccarelli. "But in the last five years or so, I started looking around for something that would give me that same phase coherence, but greater low-end and high-end content to meet the current expectations in the recording industry. People are making bigger, punchier albums these days, with an extended frequency range and plenty of synthesized sounds with extreme frequency content. For a long time, it was an unsuccessful search, and I stayed with my old monitors."
"But then I was working with The Killers at their studio in Las Vegas, and Brad [Lunde, president of ATC's U.S. distributor, TransAudio Group] loaned me a pair of ATC SCM25A loudspeakers. We were doing guitar overdubs at the time, and the moment we put the SCM25As up, I heard details that went beyond the capabilities of my old monitors. It was immediately apparent that I had to go move the mic a quarter inch because it wasn't quite right where it was. That's the kind of fine detail that I depend on to make the right decisions." Keen for more low end than the SCM25As could offer, Chiccarelli waited - on the advice of Lunde - for the introduction of the ATC SCM45As, which have two low-end drivers.
In the year-and-a-half that he's had them, Chiccarelli has used them to record, mix, and/or produce Morrissey, Alanis Morissette, Arkells, Needtobreathe, Milow, Spoon... "pretty much everything I've done," he said. "Recently I've been traveling to Montréal to work on a project with Broken Social Scene, and after I finished pretending that I could get by without my ATCs, Brad stepped in to help me find a local pair that I could use. It's really the midrange for me - that's the tell. Plenty of monitors can impress with their low end or high end, but the midrange is where most of the critical work happens. I think that's why engineers used to rely so heavily on Auratones, Altecs, and JBLs - speakers that had that clarity in the midrange. New speakers, with the exception of ATCs, are missing that. And truth be told, ATCs take that midrange clarity to a whole new level - this is something new under the sun."
Not only do the ATC SCM45As sound great and produce recordings that reliably translate, they also produce plenty of clean volume. "That's important," Chiccarelli said. "I do a lot of live tracking sessions with full bands - it's not just about the vocal. I want the band to come back into the control room and get excited about the work they're doing. I want it to be big and powerful and to reflect who they are as artists. It's an impressive psychological advantage that feeds back to inspire better recordings. My SCM45As practically sound like soffit-mounted mains!"
Chiccarelli is so reliant on and impressed by the ATC SCM45A Pro that he recently purchased a second pair for a new overdub room that he opened up in his home-away-from-home, Sunset Sound.

BETTERMAKER C502V 500 SERIES At AES 2015
Trans Audio Group Introduces the Boutique Analog Compressor

TransAudio Group, Bettermaker's U.S. distributor, introduced the path breaking Bettermaker C502V at the AES's 139th Convention earlier this year in New York City. Like the rest of Bettermaker's catalog - which in just a few short years has earned numerous TEC, Resolution, and Prosound award nominations and wins, the C502V combines a boutique analog signal path (newsworthy in its own right) with intuitive, musical controls and complete parameter recall and automation from a linked DAW-based plug-in - high-end analog sound paired with a superior digital workflow. The C502V is the first compressor from Bettermaker, although with three distinct VCA flavors in one 500-series chassis, it could just as easily be described as the first three compressors from Bettermaker! Stereo, dual mono, or M/S modes, as well as USB or analog side-chain with adjustable high-pass filtering and "look ahead" functionality expand the C502V's universe of possibilities.

Green Day's Revolution Radio
Engineer Chris Dugan's Inspiring Playback with ATCs

Green Day Engineer Chris Dugan in their project studio with ATCs

As the legendary five-time Grammy-winning punk rock trio Green Day filled out a project studio in anticipation of recording its twelfth studio album, their longtime engineer, Chris Dugan (U2, Iggy Pop, Smash Mouth), collaborated on the equipment choices. They filled it with their favorites, including API, BAE, Manley, Vintech, Universal Audio, Chandler preamps and equalizers, and a Trident 80b console. When it came time to decide on monitors, Dugan recommended ATC SCM45A Pro nearfields paired with two Studio Subwoofer Pros 18's, on his success with his own pair of ATC SCM25A Pro monitors.
As a result, "Green Day's recently released recording, Revolution Radio was recorded entirely on the ATC/Subwoofer Pros system.
"We had been demoing some songs the band had been working on, and as we made the transition to recording for the album, I suggested that we consider upping the monitoring in Green Day's project studio," Dugan said. "We agreed that it made sense to go to the top of the line so that we would know that we're doing exactly what we hope we're doing for this big recording project. I have a pair of ATC SCM25As, and I heard the SCM45As at AES last year. I knew they would give us the kind of precision monitoring that we needed, and Brad Lunde at TransAudio Group helped us complement the ATCs with two Subwoofer Pros subs." He continued, "They were exactly what we were hoping for; we were able to hear absolutely everything. When I'm talking to my non-audio friends, I tell them that monitors are like prescription glasses: you can't really discern the details without a good pair. Bad monitors hide various aspects of the sound, and it's those aspects that poke out in weird ways when you listen back on another system. In contrast, the ATCs reveal everything. The Subwoofer Pros subs fill in the bottom end nicely, which gave us a more inspiring playback - the full frequency impact was impressive!"

Bettermaker, the Poland-based maker of high-end analog equalizers with plug-in control and recall, earned two nominations: one for the Bettermaker EQ502P 500 series module and one for the Bettermaker EQ232P MKII rack-mount.

Drawmer's 1978 Tone Shaping Compressor, which incorporates different analog character circuitry and variable saturation, and Tube-Tech HLT 2A, which pairs high and low shelving with an innovative "tilt" midrange filter, earned nominations as well. Finally, ATC earned a nomination for the ATC SCM45A, three-way compact near-field monitor with unparalleled midrange fidelity. The winners will be determined by online voting via Mix, Pro Sound News, Pro Audio Review, and Electronic Musician and via professional audio and sound production organizations.

"All of these nominations go to inventor-owned companies, the kind of companies where innovation is king. We're proud to have these exciting new products recognized with TEC Award nominations," said Brad Lunde, founder and president of TransAudio Group. It's easy to imagine that there's nothing new under the sun in the world of pro audio, or that anything new is a gimmick, but that's simply not the case. The sound quality of Bettermaker's equalizers would have earned TEC nominations by itself, but the fact that their fully-analog circuitry can be recalled and automated via a plug-in interface has obvious advantages in a modern workflow. The Drawmer 1978 and the Tube-Tech HLT 2A prove that traditional compressor and equalizer topologies are not the only way to inspire fantastic mixes. Taking a different tack, ATC's SCM45A gives engineers a beefier three-way ATC nearfield with fidelity that ensures mixes will translate outside of the studio. Obviously, we encourage folks to cast their votes for these innovative tools!" adds Lunde.

This has been a good year for Alicia Keys. In addition to being a celebrity advisor for The Voice season11, she released a new song, Back To Life for Queen of Katwe soundtrack and wrote We Are Here, a song from her upcoming sixth studio album. It was written and produced by Keys, Swizz Beatz, Mark Batson, and Harold Lilly.
It's an up-tempo ballad, "We Are Here" describes Keys' frustration with both national and international issues, including the conflict between Israel and Gaza and the outbreak of the Ebola virus, as well as problems with education and gun laws in the United States. Following the song's release, Keys launched a movement, called the We Are Here Movement, for more social justice

ˇIntenso!
Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band Directed By Brent Fischer

Watch making of ˇIntenso! here

Latin Jazz Album
Composition - Play Time (Clare Fischer)
Inst. Arrangement - Play Time (Brent Fischer)

ˇIntenso! is the follow up to the 2012 Grammy®-winning ˇRitmo! featuring Brent Fischer + The Clare Fischer Latin Jazz Big Band. This will be the 56th Clare Fischer album and the last time Dr Fischer is eligible for a posthumous Grammy® consideration (he won in 1981 for Salsa Picante plus 2 +2, in 2013 for ˇRitmo! and in 2014 for Music For Strings, Percussion And The Rest).

ˇIntenso! features approximately thirty of the finest musicians on the planet on ten tracks with very special guests: Sheila E, Roberta Gambarini, Luis Conte,  Walfredo Reyes Jr., Tris Imboden, Kevin Ricard, Alex Budman, Carl Saunders, Rob Hardt, Scott Whitfield,
Francisco Torres and the Keyboard mastery of  Clare Fischer.

According to the producer  Brent Fischer, ˇIntenso! is labor of love; the inspiration for the album came from the long and vibrant father-and-son musical journey shared over three decades. "It has been a positively intense experience. First growing up as Dr Fischer's son, learning from him, then making music with him, and four years after his vibrate life ended in 2012, technology has made it possible for us to play together again on this album, ˇIntenso!," says Brent who has produced the last seven Clare Fischer albums, directs the Fischer ensembles and also arranges for Pop and R&B royalty including: D'Angelo, Elvis Costello & The Roots, and Usher.
Fischer with Sheila E

ˇIntenso! exudes energy and sparkles with Afro Cuban and Brazilian grooves, plus Fischers' rich textures and harmonies.
Listen to some Bach inspired polyphony, Stravinsky influences in Renacimiento with salsa and bluesy riffs all under the backbone of solid Latin rhythms with big band orchestration, making it a fitting salute to the master. There are surprises like Clare singing
(George-Benson style) on O Canto, adding charm to an album that's up beat and brilliant throughout. Brent alternates effortlessly playing on keyboards, guitar, 6-string bass, marimba and vibraphone with his signature 6 mallet grip. Matt Brownlie recorded the big band at  The Bridge Studios over two days and mixed the album.
Fischer with Luis Conte

ˇIntenso! has something good for everyone including some never-before-heard recordings featuring the late and great Dr. Fischer playing the piano on seven tracks. It's mostly original material by Clare, and all previously unheard arrangements by father and son. Four of their revered composers get the Fischer treatment: Dizzy Gillespie on Algo Bueno, Duke Ellington on Rockin' In Rhythm, Columbia's Crescncio Salcedo on his popularly known La Mucura, and Cuba's Osvaldo Farrés on Tres Palabras.
On this album you hear ample brilliant solos by Brian Clancy, Kristen Edkins, Alex Budman, Scott Whitfield and Carl Saunders. Butterfly Samba features vocal artistry of Roberta Gambarini, trombonist/vocalist Scott Whitfield and cleverly onomatopoeic lyrics by Darlene Koldenhoven. Ms Gambarini's vocals also appear on the romantic Gaviota, another Fischer standard. The incomparable Sheila E makes a guest appearance on Solar Patrol with her inspired performance on the timbales. The percussion feast continues with Luis Conte, Kevin Ricard, and Tris Imboden and Walfredo Reyes on drums.
The Fischer legacy is in the extraordinary and extensive aural vocabulary in music used to elevate the least developed of all the senses, hearing. "More than just a tribute to Clare Fischer, ˇIntenso! is a continuation of Clare's legacy of timeless music carried into the 21st century," according to Brent. The album ends with Play Time, a first ever recorded Fischer original. It leaves a lingering taste in listener's mouth, achieving the producer's vision for ˇIntenso!

Ginastera
The Vocal Album by Ana Maria Martinez, Virginia Tola / Santa Barbara Orchestra, Gisele Ben-Dor Placido Domingo
Warner Classics
(2016-08-03)
Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera known for his nationalist and modernist works is back in fashion thanks to Warner Classics and conductor Gisčle Ben-Dor, conductor of the Santa Barbara Symphony Orchestra in California. The album took shape over many years, with the various singers recorded separately. The contributions of Plácido Domingo, recorded in 2011 and 2014, are actually among the more recent ones. The recordings go as far back as 2002, with the Cinco Canciones Populares Argentinas, Op. 10 (Five Argentine Popular Songs), originally for voice and piano but here transcribed (in a commission by the conductor) for orchestra, and sung with the right artless quality by soprano Ana María Martínez.

The opera Don Rodrigo, Op. 31, and the cantata Milena, Op. 37, both date from later in Ginastera's career. The rather overheated Don Rodrigo, in a broadly expressionist style, is notable for Domingo's contribution (as a young singer he performed in the work's premiere), but the real find here is Milena, based on Franz Kafka's letters to his Czech lover, Milena Jesenská; the text, in Spanish, is by Ginastera himself. The work is dramatic but complex in structure, and soprano Virginia Tola, recorded in 2008, catches the feverish quality of the work. Sample the opening "Praeludium" (track eight), with its fearful plea that "written kisses don't reach their destination; the ghosts drink them up along the way."  "This is a labor of love," says Rafa Sardina credited for recording,  mastering and producing Ginastera, also worked on
the following recent projects for your consideration:
Diego Torres - "Buena Vida"
Estopa - "Rumba A Lo Desconocido"

Melissa Ethridge's new album is a collection of deep soul covers associated with the original Stax label, including songs recorded by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, William Bell and more. It also features new, original verses written by Melissa on two of the tracks. Etheridge showcases her signature rasp and unmistakable guitar prowess on the lead single "Hold On, I'm Coming." While the original Stax studio is long gone, Etheridge took to another hallowed local spot, Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios (home to Al Green, Ann Peebles and others), to channel the classic Memphis sounds found on these soulful standards.
